Violence in video games.

mortal kombat

Lets be honest for a minute. Violence in games exist, has always existed and will always exist. It has also evolved since the days of the original Mortal Kombat where the “blood” looked like someone spraying a can of paint into the air. I remember my parents giving me a big old hell no to buying it. Of course one faithful day the kid down the street got it, my mom agreed to watch us play a few rounds ad decide. So he comes over, explains the blood code and pops it in then proceeds to kick the crap out of me and rip my Scorpions head off with Sub-Zero. To which my mom laughs and since it was time for a new game anyway buys it for us a few day days later.

Violence comes in many gaming forms however, like the much blamed for stupid peoples actions Grand Theft Auto, of which i have owned pretty much all of.

GTA

It has also come a long way from top down killing sprees to banging hookers in the front seat , which in real life never goes so smooth. This series however was the bane of my existence in my time at game top since at least a few times a month i had to explain to some unknowing and lied to parent you indeed were not the cops fighting crime and you could indeed murder the hookers to get your money back, which i imagine is also not so easy in real life.

There is also the good old fashioned lets shoot everyone war games like the 2nd most blamed for everything game, call of duty.

COD

As you may be seeing a pattern, i owned this to, and in case you live under a rock its pretty much a war simulator where people with guns shoot other people with guns and occasionally decide to drop a damn nuke on your head when they are winning by around 80 points just to be a special kind of asshole.

Mario is a different kind of violence, and yes since I am indeed  human, i played this to.

Mario 1

Look we all know the drill, you take a plumber and jump on turtles heads. Tho weirdly I have never in my life heard someone blame the game for crushing the family pet while wearing some work boots. Moving on.

This last piece of violence has ended friendships and marriages probably and is probably the only violence in gaming that deserves the bad rep it gets..Yea you nerds know whats coming.

Mario Kart

Excuse my language for a moment..fuck this blue shell and the prick that came up with it, may he forever be bare foot and surrounded by legos. For those that haven’t had the pleasure of this eternal torment, basically some person loosing the race gets this and tosses, usually t the last minute,  it enters hyper drive and hits the person in first place pretty much stunning them for a few seconds that see like an eternity until they end up somewhere around 6th place while the person that threw it is still losing but laughing like a lunatic.

All that leads me to this, you will hear a ton of terms like ” desensitize” about how violence in video games creates serial killers or some such stuff. the vast majority of us however have both played these games and grew up in a time where you can actually watch a real war on the 6 o’clock news. These things do not create violence, people with mental disorders do. As always thanks for joining me, and may the gaming god bring you glory.

  1. I agree. I’m a child of the 90’s too. I remember Reptile barfing acid, melting your face off with a badass fatality and the thousands of bullets I pumped into the Nemesis; these were violent things, hell yeah. But Link has a sword, Mario bops goombas on the head, and even Pac-man eats ghosts and every MLB game requires you to pick up a bat.
