Highrise City (Steam Review)

Highrise city is another city builder that recently released that instantly will remind you of Cities Skylines when you look at it. And thanks to Deck 13 sending me a copy I know this is probably a bad description that doesn’t do the game justice.

To start there is no real tutorial, you sort of just learn as you go with tutorials showing us as you,and you can absolutely soft- lock these accidentally by building other stuff and not being able to complete the tutorial that leads to the tutorial that explains how you fix the issue you just created. This isn’t game breaking or anything, and they will pick back up after you figure it out yourself. It just would have been nice to have a dedicated tutorial like most other games in the genre.

Building things also works quite differently. For example, farms need to be surrounded by roads and can’t be mixed with commercial or residential zones. Roads are actually more important than ever before because many things can’t even be built unless they are connected properly to the road, unlike in games like SimCity and Cities where the road passing by a portion is enough.

The game however looks great despite the sometimes clunky controls and some lost FPS on bigger cities. This however is probably because it takes a massive 16 gigs of ram to run.

Another thing to note is on top of building cities, you have a fully functional economy that requires food and various resources to keep people happy. There is a lot going on here, and it’s great to see.

Should you buy this game? Well if you are looking for a competitor to Cities Skylines or SimCity, probably not. If you are looking for a city builder that offers something slightly different, then yes. It is absolutely a 7/10 worth playing. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
