Every so often there are moments in gaming that you will remember forever. One of those for me was playing Subnautica for the first time and seeing the water as you leave the life pod for the very first time. Honeycomb: The World Beyond was sent my way by Snail Games and in many ways manages to catch that same feeling except on land.
You work for Eon Corp, and as Hennessy, a bioengineer you are sent to a distant planet to help find clues on how to save the human race an possibly the Earth. SOTA7 is the name of the planet you find yourself on and it is beautiful, and home to many forms of life, some plant, some animal and not all of it friendly.
The first creature I came across was adorable admittedly, and attempted to mimic what I did. When I jumped or crouched, so did it. Eventually this made it trust me enough to pet it. Like an idiot I thought every animal would follow a similar pattern. This is how I died for the first time, a large bird looking creature and its friends killed me.
The game is filled with things like this, and you will spend much of your time taking in sights, building a base and running experiments. Sometimes on the very animals and plants you have grown fond of. Don’t worry, you aren’t a monster, you aren’t murdering them in a lab or anything like that. It is all really more similar to creating new animals through breeding.
I don’t want to spoil to much for you, but suffice it to say the game is beautiful, but it does come with a warning. If you are looking for a combat focused game, this isn’t it. You can stun dangerous animals but you won’t be fighting anything really. This is a science focused game. You will spend a lot of time traveling, searching for samples and simply taking in the view. This is fun for a lot of people, others are going to hate it. I thought it was a nice way to relax after work. it is an 8/10 experience that fans of the genre will get into, but others will want to look at other Snail Game titles to get their fill of death in.
