Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Ultimate Edition (PS4) Review

Before we get this one started, as always, I want to take a minute to thank that guys and gals over at Plan of Attack, Obsidian Entertainment, and Red Cerberus a huge thank you for the review code so we could play what I can only describe as a masterpiece of its genre. It is truly an honor to be chosen to play a game to review, and while I fully plan to bash this one a bit, it deserves plenty of praise as well.

First the story. I will start by saying you do not HAVE to play POE1 to enjoy POE2, it is however very helpful. Depending on what choices you make there are returning characters and they will make comments and mention of the last game as you return to the role of the Watcher and Eothas awakens from under your home at Caed Nua.

Eothas is a god, and a god that decides people need to die, and your soul, at least in part, belongs to him. Now why this occurs I won’t be talking about, you will have to chase him down across the world of to find that out yourself, which leads to what I believe is the best addition to the series, your boat.

The boat works as your main form of transportation around the Deadfire Islands, and you can not have a game with islands and boats without pirates. What do pirates do? They attack ships.

Ship fights require you to have a crew, cannons and so much more. The better the crew, the better your ship will operate. Have a big ship and a skeleton crew? Things won’t go so well. Have a well-trained crew with plenty of cannons and food but forgot to buy cannonballs? You are still in trouble. You will always need to make sure there is food and shot for everyone to avoid a mutiny, and if things go bad, prepare to be boarded. This all works both ways tho, and you should feel free to do the same to anyone silly enough to annoy you.

The battle system is also a strong point in this game if you like Isometric style RPG’s. From the start, you have two options, real-time with pause where the action is always going and you can pause it when you need a second to make some choices. The other choice (and the way I played it most of the time) Turn-based. This was added in the 5.0 PC version and will be familiar to those that play Xcom 2. Regardless of how you choose to play it, you will never be at a loss for strategy and things to kill. On the lower difficulties, you can make a mistake here or there and be fine but at the higher ones, the small mistakes mean certain death.

Speaking difficulty there is truly something for everyone. If you don’t have a lot of time but love the story, there is a difficulty for that. Do you want to go all out and see if you can survive the hardest challenges possible undefeated? They got you covered.

Now earlier I did say I would bash the game a little, and here are the bad points. Nothing was a deal-breaker for me, but there were a few things that got to be pretty bad at times. For example a few times I got stuck on what seemed like absolutely nothing and couldn’t move my character. This was easy enough to solve by switching characters and letting the stuck character come over to me on his own. I will also note there was a patch while I was playing that may have patched that out since it hasn’t happened since, but be aware it did occur.

Another thing that got to me was the occasional frame rate drops and slowdowns. At no point did they affect gameplay, they just exist and bother some people more than others. For me, I don’t care if they don’t last more than a second or two and these didn’t. My last complaint is my biggest tho. Even on a PS4 Pro, this game has some significant load times. They are far from the worst I have run into, but when you have to sit through a few in a row it gets to a guy.

Bottom line tho when push comes to shove, this is early 2020 PS4 game of the year candidate for me. The game is beautiful, the story and world are well crafted and the sound and voice acting is top-notch. 9/10 must-play for RPG fans.

Dog Duty (Preview)

Rotterdam, the Netherlands – February 12, 2020 – The Real Time Tactics game Dog Duty is coming to Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation®4, Xbox One, and Steam® in the spring of 2020. The fast-paced game is currently in Early Access on Steam and is being developed by indie developer Zanardi & Liza. Co-developer SOEDESCO Studios is also involved in the development of Dog Duty and is mainly focusing on the console version of the game. The action-packed title offers players epic gunfights and a healthy dose of humor as they try to defeat the evil octopus army.

With Dog Duty in its final development stages in Early Access on Steam, Leonardo Zimbres, founder of development studio Zanardi & Liza, is excited to see the game come to Nintendo Switch, PS4™ and Xbox One. “It’s great to work together with SOEDESCO Studios on the development of Dog Duty and to see them bring the game to other platforms. I’m confident in their skills, as they’ve made great progress so far. The console version looks and plays well and I can’t wait for the release.”

During its Early Access period on Steam, Dog Duty has already received several huge updates. With feedback from the community, Zanardi & Liza worked hard on further improving the game. They have added new playable characters and enemies. Players can now assemble a squad of 3 out of 8 playable characters. Zanardi & Liza have also completely revamped the UI, adding more dialogues and encounters with both friendly and enemy NPCs. Via a whole new radio deploy system, players can engage with conquered and enemy outposts. For example, players now receive taunting messages from outposts that have not been conquered yet. The Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One version will also be released with these updates.

Liberated, 9 Minutes of Gameplay

Liberated, one of the most exciting Polish video games of the first half of the year, is a groundbreaking, award winning, new vision of the future of digital comics. Panel by panel, you’ll switch between action, stealth, puzzles, and an engaging comic book story with compelling player-led choices. Liberated is coming first to Nintendo Switch in 2020, shortly followed by PC on GOG and Steam.

Liberated is set in a near-future, tech-noir society slipping into the throes of authoritarianism. Powered by corporations and enabled by new technology, join the fight against state-driven misinformation. As government surveillance and weaponised personal data have painted the world in shades of grey, knowing where to draw the line between revolution and terrorism has never been more paramount.

Publisher Walkabout Games have released nine minutes of brand new direct feed gameplay of the game. In this footage, you’ll see the main character Barry Edwards being taken to the headquarters of the mysterious insurgent group “Liberated” after being intercepted by one of its members. The video shows off the seamless transitions between storytelling and gameplay, as told through Barry’s first infiltration mission, including some precision shooting and an exciting driving segment.

The game itself seems pretty exciting, and I must admit it looks quite unique as well. Check out the gameplay below and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Mosaic Out Now on PS4

Mosaic (Console release date) is an odd game, one I have talked about before. The entire purpose of the game seems to be to just make you bored out of your damn mind with the mundane task of your life so that you simply refuse to do them and go off and do whatever you want to avoid doing them and by doing so, bring some color and fun into the world itself. This is one of those games I am curious about because it seems like a silly idea, but just silly enough to work. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Donut County (PS4)

Donut County is an odd game. It is the story of a racooon and his donut shop. And when some orders a donut from his shop they get, well a literal hole. You control this hole.

The hole starts rather small, and as you small small objects like rocks or small lizards the hole gets bigger. As it gets bigger you can swallow up bigger objects and eventually buildings.

There is actually a story about how Racoon just wants to score points to get a quadcoptet and how there is a king racoon that wants there to be more garbage and such, as always I won’t spoil it.

The game controls well and while it isn’t at all hard it is entertaining. And for you trophy hunters you can get a platinum in about 3 hours. The game is also pretty cheap so I see no reason why you shouldn’t give it a go. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

DragonBall FighterZ

DragonBall FighterZ is the DBZ fighting game people wanted for years and never truly got. This beautiful 2D fighter quickly became loved by people that grew tired of Marvel vs Capcom or simply love fighting games and wanted something new to sink their teeth into. The graphics are beautiful and the sounds are outstanding. The character selection starting out was nice and has been expanded nicely since launch.

There is also no shortage of things to do in the game itself with online and offline fighting modes, things to collect and even modes to simply watch. There is not a lot to say here, if you are a DBZ fan or a fan of fighting games, it is worth picking up. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot (PS4)

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is another DBZ game once again tells the story from when Raditz shows up until the end of the Buu Saga. Despite the name of the game, you will also spend most of the game NOT controlling Kakarot. When you do control him tho you will pretty much feel like a god much of the time which is nice.

The graphics are undeniably amazing and the sound is exactly what you would want. Most importantly from this RPG (and yes it is an RPG) is you will get to explore the world of DBZ. Fly around and check things out, visit towns hunt animals, go fishing explore to your heart is content. Maybe kick around some robots or Saiba men.

You can learn new moves or power them up with experience, or by training in special areas tho some moves are locked behind certain criteria. For example, don’t expect to go Super Saiyan before Goku would in the show or to defeat Raditz with a Spirit Bomb.

Another nice touch is when you eat you are given a permanent stat boost. This is why eating is important, along with that is a temporary boost that can make quite a bit of difference. I don’t want to talk about much besides the basics because there is a lot to do and I don’t want to spoil it. To me, this was the best DBZ game ever made tho I wouldn’t argue with those that prefer Fighter Z, which coincidently is tomorrow’s review. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Stardew Valley Multiplayer Update

So as much as I have played Statdew Valley I never really experienced the multiplayer aspect until recently. Me and my daughter played most of the weekend. I have mixed feelings about it but they are mostly positive.

Playing with a friend does split much of the work and makes gather resources, mining and farming much easier.

It does sadly make buying anything 2-4 times more expensive depending on who you are playing with because all tools and storage backpacks need to be bought for everyone. That is really my only complaint but I understand why it is that way, because it needs to be.

The quality of life improvments that came along with it were fantastic tho. The ability to see what belongs in a community bundle from your inventory and stacking things like chest or crab pots in your inventory is a godsend. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to improvements made, but admittedly they are mostly fantastic.

My only othet complaint is even with a wired connection we would occasionally drop our connection. Probably once an hour or so on a bad day and not at all on others. Despite those minor complaints as much as I love Stardew Valley alone, with a friend is my favorite way to play. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Mad Games Tycoon

Mad games Tycoon is a simulation game like many others, except this time it is a game about making games. Yes it has been done before, so the real question becomes is it done well.

Short answer is yes, it has been. You start in your garage with a little money. You will build a few small rooms to start programming very basic games. With some more research money and time you can make bigger and better games.

Eventually you can make your own consoles and work with far more modern equipment, but you will have to earn your way there.

The game is fun and will require plenty of strategy. For fans of the genre its not bad. Its not much to look at however, tho most games of the type are not. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Plague Inc. (PS4)

Plague Inc is a mobile game ported to console, and the real differences are as opposed to being free like it is on mobile where you can pay to unlock things, on the console you buy it and earn unlockables by playing. Aside from that and controller changes, it is the same game. You name your virus or fungus or whatever you design, plant it somewhere, choose how it evolves and spreads and try to kill everyone on earth.

While that is it and is just what the game is it is actually quite fun and hard to master. The scientist will try to find cures people will take better care of themselves as it spreads and countries will close their borders as it spreads. It is a fun little game I suggest you pick up on a sale as it isn’t really worth more than $5 or so. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
