Truth or Dare (2017)

Truth or Dare is a movie that has a pretty cool premise. A group of teens around Halloween rent out a supposedly haunted house to have some fun. Back in the 1980’s a different group played truth or dare and all but one person died, and now these people decide to have a few drinks and play themselves. Sounds like good fun until it turns out the house really is haunted, and the ghost is using this normally harmless game to kill people.

In reality the movie isn’t very good. Sure the acting is fine and so are the effects, but the movie is just trying so damn hard to appeal to millennials. The story itself makes no real sense, with plot holes and contradictions. Towards the halfway point the find the original survivor ( yes they leave the house) and are told it in fact isn’t a ghost but an evil entity that isn’t limited to one place and that is why the game has continued. However, they have to go back to the house since that is where the game started and it has to end there.

The movie has moments of being fun and entertaining but for the most part the movie is simply a train wreck and it is sad because potentially the movie could have been great, it simply needed to stop trying to be cool for a certain age range and try to be the movie it needed to be. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Our Favorite Movies Day 15: Bram Stokers Dracula

images

Day 15, and my last day of doing this I am ended with a classic. After today our good friend  @torstenvblog will be taking over. The ending to this, Dracula.  The movie was made in 1992 but the story goes back far longer Dracula is of course the story of, well here. Check this out if you need to know more about the story. The story of Dracula is a classic and has been around for more than 100 years and will be around for 100 more I am sure. The movie is scary, had a great art and music style to it and it is also the first movie my parents banned me from the room for. What my mother doesn’t know is my father watched that movie with me and my bro when mom went to work later in the week making it also the first time I am aware of my dad went behind my moms back to show us something. That is why this made my list, best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Our Favorite Movies Day 14: Poltergeist

download (2)

Here are on day 14, this is weirdly one of the few movies on the list we have never reviewed. This isn’t about truly reviewing the movies for me, but a real quick run down the little girl in this picture gets taken by a poltergeist and the family tries to save her.  The line most people know from this movie is “They’re here.” The movie itself is pretty great, as many 80’s movies were tho many were pretty horrible. This one is remembered fondly because of how great it was. That is actually why it’s on the list. I also remember this one fondly because I actually saw it for the first time with my mother, and as far as i remember is the first one I saw with her. So definitely check this one out, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Our Favorite Movies Day 13: Hellraiser

download

Hellraiser Movie review is our day 13 movie, and why? Well its got pinhead. This movie revolves around solving a puzzle. The movie itself is quite cliché but Clive Barker made it quite brutal and is an amazing 80’s movie. This classic is worthy of this spot on the list, tho sadly the later films in the series are less than good. If you are a horror fan tho there are very few must see films, but this is on the list. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

I found a box trilogy on Amazon for those that love the series and want to support us. Feel free to check that out.

Our Favorite Movies Day 12:Child’s Play

Day 12 brings us a class, Child’s Play. By now most of you know this story. Killer dies, uses Voodoo to toss his soul into a Chucky doll., kills people. The formula has worked for decades now. This is also the only horror movie I can honestly say I shared with my father and all of my kids.

It is also worth noting there My Buddy dolls when i was a kid and mine looked just like this creepy bastard. I once tied a knife to it and threw it at my brother. Yes it was a real knife, yes I got in a lot of trouble and yes he punched me. This movie however having released in 1988 has about 30 years of history with 7 movies in all, and no signs of stopping. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Our Favorite Movies Day 11: IT (2017)

It (2017) Yes I will say it, feel free to hate me. IT 2017 is far better than the original. I thought this when I checked out 2017 in the theaters, but recently I went back and watched the original and it was legitimately painful to watch. 2017 made this list for being both a great movie and a movie that surprised me most recently. I thought this movie was going to be horrible. From the fact it would be split in 2 to not Tim being Pennywise made this a recipe for a bad movie. What we got however was an amazing movie any horror fan would be doing themselves a disservice skipping. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Like we have been doing lately, here is a link to Amazon where you can purchase this movie. It helps us as well as gets you the movie. It 2017 on Amazon

Our Favorite Movies Day 10:Birds(1963)

Alfred Hitchcock made quite the simple movie here. Birds for some reason attack people. The magic of this movie is that we have all seen birds just hanging out, and I dare you to watch this movie and not wonder if those birds sitting on your cloths line or power line are going to kill someone.

That is why this classic is on the list for me. It was probably the first horror movie I have seen that made me think in the real world this stuff could happen. And I know @torstenvblog in real life, we hang out and drink together, and have worked together at real life jobs. The dude is semi afraid of birds and I mean that legitimately. Not like outside terrified of them, but he got one in his house and me and 2 other friends had to go over to his house and get them out. His reasoning was he saw Birds. That is a 100% true story that happened this summer, and that is why this movie deserves to be on the list. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Zombieland 2

After many years of rumors and such Comicbook.com and many others have been reporting that zombieland 2 is set to release a year from now in October of 2019, 10 years after the original. The stars had to align to make this happen with. Getting the original cast together was hard, and they pretty much demanded a high quality script.  Wegotthiscovered.com also reports that we have been promised a cameo that will rival that of the Bill Fucking Murray came from the first, but we will have to wait to see. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Our favorites, Day 3:Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is day 3 of our favorite movies and this one is actually for a very similar reason to the last two days. It is simply a classic with good memories attached to it. Tho I do enjoy that one of the most famous killers in horror movies isn’t in the first movie from his iconic series. And please, don’t give me that ” well they talk about him” or ” they show him as a kid” because you all know what I mean.

The movie itself is not graphically amazing, the script isn’t. There actually isn’t much of a reason for this movie to be what it is. Seriously go back and watch this legendary beast from 1980. Hell just go look at metacritic. The movie gets trashed. A lot. But this cult classic holds special place in horror fans hearts and spawned movies and games. Speaking of games, Friday The 13th: The Game review is free on PSN in October. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Are They Really Horror Movies?

There are certain movies that always sort of get called horror movies, but aren’t really horror movies but people discuss them as if they were or weren’t horror movies. For example Alien. There really isn’t much to call this a horror movie. It takes place in space, involves a literal alien species that takes over a space ship. This is all typical and known sci-fi territory in every sense of the genre. Many times however it gets tossed into the horror section. Here for example Nerdist list as a space horror movie. I have had this argument with @torstenvblog for years actually. But realistically aside from “it scared some people” I have never gotten a real answer on how its a horror movie.

Another one I have heard, and made a list of 70 best horror movies is Jaws (1975) A thriller about a man-eating shark somehow quite often gets tossed into the horror movie category because simply, it scared people. What we really need is some sort of check list to decide this on. Is something being scary simply what decides it? Because plenty of horror movies didn’t scare me so are they no longer horror movies? Clearly being scary isn’t enough imply on the grounds of that being subjective. I also am not sure that simply having a monster won’t do it. Godzilla is a monster and nobody would call those monster movies.

Realistically I think we need to have a few things in place, for example there needs to be some sort of otherworldly or super force in play. Think werewolf or vampire or maybe Freddie/Jason sort of deal. A natural entity such as a shark or Alien alone doesn’t seem to be enough.

On the other side of things, a movie should also be making the attempt to be scary on some level, obvious exceptions are when something is trying to be funny or is clearly setting up something for later. Nobody expects horror movies to be scary constantly. Jaws was a suspenseful movie and had some jump scares, but the movie was never really designed to truly make you scared the same way most horror movies are.

Now I am not pretending to be an expect or to by any means simply dismiss new variations of the horror genre. In fact I love them, but this idea that anything that is scary equals horror movie makes very little sense to me. It is like saying anything that has a funny moment is a comedy which is something nobody ever says.

Anyway, I truly think it is time we recognize that movies like Jaws and Alien are great and classic movies, they simply are not horror movies. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
