The Caligula Effect: Overdose

The Caligula Effect Overdose was originally released back in 2016 in Japan, then simply called The Caligula Effect. They have added quite a few things to the game, but before we get to that once again a huge shout out to NIS America for hooking us up with yet another game. Nothing but love for you guys. In the past, they have let us check out Disgaea 1 Complete (PS4) and The Lost Child (PS4) so it is always a pleasure to hear from them.

Now for the added stuff, first you can now choose to play a boy or girl and playing as the female protagonist does change many of the character interactions. There are also 2 new members of the Go-Home Club which is the group you are in as well as an entirely new story path in the game that lets you get to know the musicians. They have added quite a bit to this version of the game and admittedly it adds a lot of replay value.

The gameplay itself reminds me quite a bit of the Persona series. It is very Japanese in nature, in fact, all the voices are in Japanese with English subtitles. At first, this was a bit distracting to me but I did get used to it pretty quickly. It didn’t take away from the story at all so, in the end, it doesn’t really matter. The story itself is rather interesting as you are trapt in Mobius and you in the other members of the Go-Home Club attempt to track down the musicians that brainwash all of its inhabitants so you can find their leader and force them to take you home.

The battle system is pretty original. On the surface, it may look like a standard JRPG with a turn-based system, but if you look under the hood there is a ton more going on. As you pick moves you will get a small preview of the following action. This represents how the turn will go if things go pretty much perfectly. Things won’t necessarily play out this way but it gives you a good idea. Some actions will also pop enemies into the air while other actions cause more damage to airborne enemies or that have fallen on the ground. So it is pretty handy that you can delay a character’s actions until after someone else with just a push of a button. So person one can pop an enemy into the air, delay the action of the next and shoot them while they are in the air causing massive damage. It functions very well and may be the best part of the game except for one small detail we will get into later.

The graphics and sound are great with the music being even more outstanding when the musicians are on a map. They all have their own distinct style that matches their characters. Speaking of characters, while I don’t like most of the characters, they are well done. Also, the reason I don’t like them has to do with the very reason Mobius exist in the first place and is very much by design. One of the musicians, Stork, is legitimately a pervert and sends his time attempting to get a free peep show from women. This is, in contrast, one of the ladies in your party absolutely HATES men with a blinding passion. All of this will be explained throughout the game, and it all has a very good reason, but many of the characters are simply not good people. It is, however, fascinating to see and learn.

The game does have some issues I will admit. For example, as great as the battle system is, unless you are playing on the hardest difficulty setting you won’t be overly engaged. In fact, I won the first few boss battles by simply holding the X button to quickly input commands while playing on normal. There is a pretty significant difficulty spike from there tho. Also, there are certain doors locked by special words that the game never truly explains very well how to get, tho if you make a lot of friends and help them on their side quest you should get them just fine anyway.

Now for the reason, you all came. Should you spend your hard earned money on The Caligula Effect Overdose? This one is a hard one for me to answer. The game has a fun story and battle system but there are long periods of simply going through the motions. JRPG fans will enjoy the game, however, I think most people may be a bit hit or miss with it. The game is a solid 7 out of 10, and a great example of what an updated version of a game should be. I personally would be happy to spend money on it, and fans of other NIS American fans will enjoy it I believe. Others looking to break into the genre tho are probably better off looking at a different game, however. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Why A 2019 Final Fantasy 7 Remake Would Be Too Little Too Late For Me

First, let me make this clear, I don’t hate Final Fantasy 7. I actually beat the original U.S. release about 3 days before it came out when a friend of my brothers broke street date and gave it to me the day they got the game in and instantly restarted it. I bought it again for PC and beat that in an age when you still bought games on disk, then bout it again on PS4 and platinumed it. This is not a post about how I hate the game. This is also not a post about how I am a purist that is mad about all the stuff they are supposedly changing. The game is a remake, not a remaster. Stuff is going to change.

All that said, the game was originally announced in 2015 which even the director Tetsuya Nomura admits to being too early at this point. That is 4 years ago with almost no real information given. The actual only truly notable update from the company itself in recent memory was that it moved from an outsourced company to in-house. Even the 2019 part is pure speculation based off reports that Square Enix is expecting a large source of revenue for the end of the year hinting at a huge release.

So why is it too late? Honestly, it is because I can’t care. I can get past the fact that they will undoubtedly change many of my favorite aspects of one of my favorite games or the fact that the game will apparently be episodic the same way Final Fantasy 13 was and I will end up buying multiple games to play a single game I played years ago in what will probably be an attempt at a massive cash grab. I am however open to the idea that they will be simply combining all the FF7 games into one and that is why it will be so long, but even that will be kind of weird depending on how it is done honestly.

Combining that with what has already been a pretty substantial wait and I truthfully just can’t care or be excited anymore. This is after the roughly six-year wait after Kingdom Hearts 3 was first announced and waiting so long for Final Fantasy 13 Versus it became Final Fantasy 15, none of which were worth the wait if we are being 100% honest. Not to say they weren’t great games in their own right, but after that kind of wait they could have been better and should have been. So no, for me even if Final Fantasy 7 Remake comes this year, it will be far too little and far too late. I’ll buy it eventually I am sure, but they can wait. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Space Jam 2 Finally Gets Release Date

You , That read that right. After what feels like years of waiting and rumors, because it probably was,  Space Jam 2 will finally see the light of day and Lebron will finally be equal to Jordan and get to save the universe with the Loony Toones. That date, July 6th,2021. Now I don’t know how good this will be, but I am rather excited to see it all the same. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Sylvester Stallone To Make Super Hero Movie?

Cinemablend is reporting that Sly is interested in making and staring in his own superhero movie called Samaritan. It is reportedly attached to his production company and is about a young boy that finds a missing hero that went missing after a battle a couple decades ago, which we can probably assume would be played by Sly himself. The concept is interesting and worth keeping an eye on I think. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

5 Favorite T.V. Shows

We all have favorite shows, some of them comedies some of the horror but we all have them. I know a guy that is obsessed with the news, tho he is a bit odd. These, however, are mine, tho admittedly first on the list is an entire series since it would be a bit unfair to separate them. Also, this isn’t in any order.

Yup, Star Trek. Who didn’t see this coming? Sure the show has had its ups and downs and Enterprise wasn’t always a great show but the show itself was amazing and changed the history of television forever. Also for the record, as awesome as Kirk was, Picard was the better captain.

Scrubs, which I don’t care what anyone says was the best medical show ever. Between the bromance of Turk and J.D. to the greatness that is the Janitor. The show is just good old fashioned fun.

Supernatural as you all know is one of my favorite shows and has been for a while, which is odd since I waited forever to even start watching it. You do mostly need to see the entire thing or you will be lost, but it is totally worth it.

How I Met Your Mother is another one of those shows I was a little late to the party on. By late I mean I watched it after it aired and I already knew who the mother was. Some o the running jokes alone are amazing, such as slapsgiving or what the hell does Barney do for a living?  Plus the songs are great.

Married With Children, a show that wouldn’t work today. Seriously check it out. Why Married With Children Wouldn’t Work In 2019 Its a great show, and hilarious and I doubt we will ever see another show like it. Between the jokes, and the fact that many people can actually relate to the family itself it is no surprise the show was so popular and also still has a cult following today.

So that is my list, what shows do you guys got? Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Chris Hemsworth As Hulk Hogan

In a future that I don’t think anyone could ever have predicted, there will be a Hulk Hogan Biopic he will be played by, well Chris Hemsworth. Yes, the man that plays one of the most renowned Super Heroes of the last 20 years will now be playing one of the most renowned professional wrestlers of all time and honestly, all I could think was, who is going to play Macho Man Randy Savage? Obviously, he will have to play heavily into this biopic. Well, I have the one and only answer, and the picture is below. So enjoy, and best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Trials Rising Open Beta (PS4)

I have an odd history with the Trials games. I never played them, and never cared to play them. Sometime last year Trails fusion was given out for free on PSN so I figured hell, let’s give it a shot. The truth is I enjoyed it, loved it at times and hated it at others. The constant decisions of do I floor it and go full speed ahead or do I ease up and go slow and steady? Is this the time to front flip or backflip or not flip at all? It was a thrill I wasn’t expecting, so when Trials Rising was announced I was pretty interested.

After spending a few hours with the open beta I have to say the magic is still there, and the addition of the tandem bikes is an interesting one, I personally don’t enjoy it but I can see how many will. The issue is for me that it is still just a Trials game. If you played one you pretty much played the other. Did you like Trials Fusion, you will probably like this one and if you hated the other this probably won’t change it. Also yes there does seem to be cosmetic loot boxes tho you get them whenever you level up anyway. The full release tho is on my buy list. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Degrees Of Separation (PS4)

Some of you may remember me talking about this game a while back, and the guys over at Modus Games sent me a review copy, namely Geoff (seriously go check them out on Twitter) which I am always grateful for. I always like to get this admission out of the way before I review a game because I feel everyone deserves to know. That being said, let us talk about this tale of love that was sent to me appropriately on Valentine’s day.

The game is described as “an atmospheric 2D puzzle platformer”, which tells you a lot and nothing at the same time oddly enough. Sure it will tell you what the game is, but I don’t feel it truly does this game justice. You will control two characters, Ember, who is always in what can probably be best described as summer and Rime, who is always in winter. The two leave their homes and meet on a bridge, and from there they will go on a magical journey of discovery where they will get to know the world around them, each other, and how their abilities will help each other. Yes, there is more to the story, so much more which is both beautiful and for me was sad in its own way but I never want to spoil the experience for you guys.

The key aspect of this game is the puzzles. They range from simple things like using Ember to light something and move a platform to use Rime to freeze some water to walk across. Later you will get a sort of wand to create a bridge out of the area between worlds for one of the characters to walk across with the purpose of collecting scarfs which after collecting so many will allow you to access new areas. See, this is where the sad part was for me. These two characters work together and get closer and closer, but they can’t touch each other or ever truly embrace. Their worlds of summer and winter are literally keeping them apart. I don’t know if this was an intentional thing from the developers over at Moondrop games, but for me, it was a constant thread in my journey.

The puzzles were also very well done. See many are pretty straight forward while others pissed me off to no end, but they were fair. I never came across a puzzle I felt was unfair or that once I figured it out I was left wondering who would ever have thought of that. Despite the fact that I hate the phrase, this isn’t the “Dark Souls” of puzzle games and it isn’t designed for you to fail until you figure things out. It wants you to succeed and watch the story unfold and it wants you to explore.

The real thing I loved about this, however, was the couch co-op. Yes, you can play this by yourself, and you are free to do so. I started that way and had some fun. However, when my friend joined me is when we had some fun. She isn’t a gamer, I just said hey Casey I need some help come play a game so she did. She had no issue picking it up and I really didn’t have to explain much to her. It was great to have someone else to help figure out the puzzles and I truly believe this is the best way to experience the game.

The one big gripe I have about this game is there is a quick travel system. The issue is I found it on accident and until that point, I had no idea. While we were trying to figure out one puzzle I got a little to close to a little object, in the picture below it looks like stacked rocks with orange arrows for guidance. When I hit circle I turned into a butterfly to follow the paths to places I have collected the scarfs.

All that being said, the real question comes down to the one simple question, should you spend your hard earned money on this game? Truth be told, I don’t like puzzle games. I never would have bought this game truth be told, but I asked for the review copy because Geoff is a good guy and Modus games are quickly becoming one of my favorite companies. They haven’t let me down yet and I have enjoyed everything of theirs I have played. The day will come when I will sadly have to say hey this game sucks don’t buy it, but today is not that day. The story is nice and I quickly became attached to them, I never came across any glitches and the graphics and sound matched what they were trying to tell. This game is Savior approved, 9/10 one of the best puzzle games I have played.

Aquaman Sequal and The Trench Spin-off

For those fans of Aquaman, and judging by the fact that it is the highest grossing DC movie of all time there are a lot of you, it will come as no surprise it is getting a sequel. It, however, is also getting a spin-off, a horror movie called The Trench. This seems like a perfect fit considering what the Trench was in the movie and what it was used for. Rottentomatoes has more details, but honestly, I am assuming The Trench will be a prequel to Aquaman considering the events of the actual movie and that it is thought none of the main characters will be in it. I am actually really excited to see how it plays out, best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Ice Wars Comic-Con

This weekend I helped out my good friends at Geek Gizmos (go check out their Twitter that I am trying to get them to use more) and I have to say, it was a really odd weekend, in a good way. I got to meet Tony Atlus and talk to him for a bit and weirdly, watch him use one of our replica toy Master Swords to have a sword fight with 2 small children. They stabbed him with lightsabers and he died. He was a pretty cool guy and in better shape than most 20-year-olds even at over age 60.

Another cool meeting was former New York Ranger Chris Kotsopoulos, as a huge hockey getting to stand around Sunday morning before everything started and just listen to his old stories and chat about how the sport has changed and even stayed the same was great. He told me what it was like to see Wayne Gretzky on the ice, or how he and the guys would go out drinking the night before then have to get up the next day for morning skate take a nap and till manage to play a game.

Two more people I got to meet but sadly didn’t get to talk to as much as I would have liked was Andrew “The Reinforcer” Anderson, a professional wrestler and appeared in Gotham and was involved in The Wrestler. He was a fun guy to be around and getting a guy that appeared in a DC show playfully hit his friend with Thor’s hammer was pretty fun in its own right. I also got a good laugh at him asking a group of guys “Hey you like wrestling?” and when they said yes yelling” Then what the fuck are you doing get to my table!” with a big laugh. The group spent about 20 minutes with him and got some pictures taken. The other was Jessica Felice of Take Out and All American Girl, two things I admit I had never seen but she was a sweetheart and very friendly. She even swung by our booth just to say hey and introduce herself.

The experience was great, and getting to hang out with my old bosses and friends from my days at Gamestop was great. So if you need any geek products like this Destiny Ghost.
