Shining Force

sfr_desktop_01_1280x1024.jpg

Shining Force was originally a Sega Genesis game that was later released as part of other collections and even as a gameboy advance game, tho oddly I have met very few people that have played it. The game itself is heavily based on story and the battle system is a tactics style game that changes view for the combat scene like shown below.

The story involves a young man chosen to lead the Shining Force when strange creatures from a foreign land investigate a nearby ruin his kingdom is sworn to protect. With plenty of characters to choose from and command and plenty of battles to enjoy any fan of the genre should check it out. As always thanks for joining me, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Mario RPG

mARIO-RPG.jpg

Mario RPG is viewed by many, including myself, as possibly the best Mario game ever made. The battle system is simple, yet elegant with timed button presses or other button moves to do extra damage or healing. The game also has an amazing story that involves many things including Bowser being kicked out of his castle, Mario collecting pieces of stars and even fighting what are basically power rangers. The first time I played this game I wasn’t expecting all that much. Just a short average at best RPG, and I’ve never been so happy in my life to be wrong. Visually this game was one of the best the SNES had to offer, the sound and story were amazing and the world itself was a mix between charming and deadly with a mix of comedy with a few easter eggs to the Final Fantasy series to finish it off. This is a must play game for RPG and Mario fans alike. Until next time, may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Act raiser review

act raiser

Act Raiser is an old Super Nintendo game where you play as a god that has lost his powers thanks to the people no longer believing in you. So you take control is a side scrolling action segments in order to rid the land of a powerful enemy so the land becomes inhabitable again.

act raiser game play

After the side scrolling event you will start on a sort of Sim City type game play where you guide your village  to grow and discover new technology such as wheat or bridge building which you can then give to your other towns. This simple formula actually makes for a great and fun game as your villages grow, find you new spells and items and even help other towns grow. This is definitely one of those games you would be doing yourself a huge favor to try out. Thanks for your time, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Shining Force 2

shining force 2

Another classic sega RPG, shining force 2 is a grid based strategy RPG, with dozens of characters to build your team from. The battles play out on the world map shown here.

shining force 2 fight.jpg

the battles take place in between the story about a thief that steals magical jewels that sealed a great evil from the world by the name of Zeon. as you fight the battle switch from the world map to a close up view to see your attack, below you can see the main character attack the before mentioned Zeon.

shining force 2 battle

The graphics for this games time was pretty solid and so was the sound. This great game can also be found on Sonics ultimate genesis collection on the PS3 and XB360 and is worth checking out if you have the means. The story is well paced and compelling with characters you will easily get attached to. With a few solid twist and turns and more than one difficulty level you will get your moneys work on this one. Best of luck, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Phantasy Star 4

phantasy star 4

Phantasy Star 4 is one of those nostalgia games i’d love to see get another release, but largely be untouched like in previous collections it was in for the PS3 and XB360. The game mostly takes place on the planet of Motavia in the Algol star system, but you did travel to multiple satellites and planets. The turn based battle system offered  lot of strategy with spells and skill that could combine to create entirely new abilities. The story itself was pretty standard for its time, group of people that meet under various circumstances must save the solar system with the main character, Chaz being revealed to be the chosen one. The art style was great with cut scenes playing out in a comic story board manner.

PS 4 cutscene

I have played through this game more than a few times over the years, and I have to say it holds up extremely well. The controls still feel nice, the story still fun and the combat still engaging. Any RPG fan should absolutely try it out. As usual, may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Star Wars, knights of the old republic 2

star wars 2

This game is rather weird. 1st it was made my Obsidian rather than Bioware and second it was basically released with a lot of bugs and largely unfinished. That being said, the game itself isn’t all that bad really. It takes place about 5 years after the end of the first game and with mostly new characters. At the very beginning you will be asked how the first game ended the game mostly play out from there. It looks and plays mostly the same way as the first except this time most of the supporting characters can also become jedi but only if you are on the correct side of the force. While the first game let you see how the others felt about you, this time around it also effects how they act towards you and even to an extent their combat ability.. As always thanks for joining me, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 review

hellraiser 2

Another classic based of a Clive Barker story with the screenplay done by Peter Atkins and directed by Tony Randal. Hellbound takes place directly after the first hellraiser with Kristine now in a mental hospital which should be no surprise. In typical sequel fashion while she begs and pleads for an item to be destroyed so her evil stepmom cant come back from the dead no one believes poor Kristy. You know, until the even more evil occultist head of the mental hospital lets a crazy dude slice himself open reviving Kristys evil  step mom back then later letting another solve the puzzle once again releasing the Cenobites which as far as i can tell are former humans that basically became demons. The movie itself has some flashes of nudity, plenty of death and enough fake blood and dead bodies to drowned a small army. Honestly sitting here watching the movie i couldn’t really see anything that made the movie special even for its time. Worse still it seems even the directer and screenwriter didn’t seem to care enough to do anything new or interesting to the point that even the formerly dead step mother claims the rules of the fairy tale have changed with her no longer just being the wicked step mother but now the evil queen.

I wont go as far to say the movie was bad despite poor ratings on both Rotten Tomatoes (48%) and IMDb (6.5/10) the movie just was not special in any way. Pinhead and the Cenobites aren’t bad villains, they simply don’t seem to be very well utilized this time around.  They come across as a mix between Freddie Kruger and some weird carnival freak show which honestly have simply been done better by others, tho done well enough for there to be 9 movie in the series. As always thanks for joining me, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Arcade Archives: Contra

AA Contra

Another long title that as implies is the port of an arcade version, not the NES version well grew up playing. What you basically lose here is the famous Konami code and what you gain are superior graphics and sound. It is worth pointing out tho that there is a code for 30 lives that’s quite similar to the classic code. The levels are as far as i can tell exactly the same and still quite the pain in the ass, but weirdly if you re on the top of a level and jump above the screen you can’t fire your weapon which is quite annoying and can get you killed. The levels are pretty fast paced and by todays standards pretty short which really isn’t  problem for an $8 retro game. It also comes with the American and Japanese version as well as a high-score mode and trophy support for those that care to hunt the few of them down. While its a nice stroll down nostalgia lane i have to admit for whatever reason the game just doesn’t feel as fun as it once did. As always thanks for your time and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

ACA Neogeo Super Baseball 2020

super baseball

Ok that may be the longest title I have ever had to type out. Seriously the title of this is actually the name of the game. Anyway a friend of mine posted this game was coming out and I thought well damn, i loved this game as a kid I need to pick this up. So i picked it up, waited the 30 seconds it took to download and I have to say it held up pretty decently for an old arcade game. Yes this is based off an arcade version, not the Sega Genesis. the graphics aren’t half bad and the sound held up fairly well also. There re a few issues that drive me nuts tho. They for whatever reason kept the normal arcade time limit when making choices. Which in an actual arcade is no big deal, dealing with that shit at home is super annoying. But wait, there’s more, every 5 minutes the game gets interrupted until you ” insert coins” and hit continue which more than a few times happens in the middle of a pitch which was annoying as hell. When all is said and done its a solid port of the game and aside from a few issues its worth the 8 bucks. As always thanks for your time and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Final Fantasy 7 retro review

FF7

So lately I have been getting into some older games, and that of course lead me to Final Fantasy 7. This review was actually quite hard for me to write since i want to be honest but many times nostalgia gets in the way. For example one of my favorite scenes from FF7 was Sepheroth   walking through the fire.

FF7 Seph.

But hey as long as we are being honest by todays standards the scene like many from FF7 don’t exactly hold up very well. Honestly the story itself holds up pretty badly. Sure 20 years ago i didn’t notice that the whole story with Zack was so far out of the way without a strategy guide you could easily miss it. Recently going to the temple after Wutai ( rocket town if you don’t recruit Yuffie) I noticed the game never actually told me i needed the keystone at the gold saucer unless you happen to stop at the weapons dealer in the random cabin that also isn’t mentioned. Stuff like that aside all these years later the materia system is still quite deep and engaging while chocobo breeding and racing is still one of my favorite parts of the game.

The battle graphics also do not hold up very well and looking back i’m not sure they were ever as good as most of us thought .

FF7 enemy

That being said the battles themselves are still fun and many still pose a pretty good challenge. If somehow you managed to not play this game I would still recommend picking it up on playstation 4 since it is pretty cheap, tho I would advise you to avoid the cheats that are enabled. They do however make that grind for limit breaks so much easier and that was always the part i hated the most. All that being said thank for joining me, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
