Caddyshack (1980)

Oh caddyshack, you beautiful classic bastard. Its hard to believe this movie is going on 38 years old. The late Rodney Dangerfield is hilarious playing a brash new member of a very exclusive golf club as a very young Bill Murray plays an obsessed grounds keeper just trying to kill a gopher, and directed by the late great Harold Ramis, so at least he has that going for him. This movie is one of those classic 80’s movies that people today still quote and look at as an all time great and with good reason. People just loved this movie from the very beginning. Even today sitting down to watch it just brings a smile to my face. Any movie fan needs to watch this movie, even if its just for the history. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Sharknado 5 (2017)

Oh Sharknado. I am pretty sure people mostly watch these movies to see how far off the deep end of what the fuck did I just watch they can go, and Sharknado 5 goes even further off that deep end than ever before. I am talking hit a rock star with a bus so he plays some metal while driving down the road then kills a shark with his guitar style off the deep end. The movie is goofy and silly as hell, just like the last 4. The dialogue is corny, the visuals are pretty much as B movie as they can possibly get. And if you enjoyed the last 4 you will like this one, if you didn’t, this will not change that at all. In fact this one may actually make some fans shy away from continuing the series, and I do mean continuing since the ending pretty much promised a part 6.

However I did enjoy the movie for what it was, and I will watch the next one. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

License to Wed (2007)

License to Wed is the sweet story of how a couple met, fell in love and decided to get married. Then a possibly deranged and crazy but possibly genius minister played by the late great Robin Williams. The story starts off much like any comedic love story, boy meets girl, boy falls in love, boy proposes. They then go to girls church she frequented growing up to get her favorite and most loved religious adviser not named Savior to unite them in holy matrimony.

This is around the time Mr. Williams as the minister turns out to be possibly bat shit crazy with a game show similar to Family Fued going on with the 10 commandments and children with plans to take them in the park the next day to learn about the sins of gambling. He then informs them all to bring a dollar and ask their parents what a trifecta is. For those that don’t gamble a trifecta is a term for when a gambler places a wager on their ability to pick the placement of the first 3 positions of a race for example.

Anyway that aside they decide between being wed in 3 weeks or 2 years, and the race is on to finish a multi month course in 3 weeks. This will include counseling sessions, both group and one on one, a random visit for the minister to talk about sex, them not being allowed to have sex and driving a car blindfolded. The movie is great and a lot of fun and any comedy fan should check it out, best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Hot Rod (2007)

Hot Rod is the story of a wannabe stunt man following the path of his father, a father that died during a tragic stunt. Rod Kimble lives at home with mom, step dad and half brother. His half brother his part of his team that helps him set up his stunts. His step dad beats him during sparing matches where Rod attempts to prove he really is a man, and his stunts are basically the joke of the town. But can he change all this when his step dad needs an expensive surgery to save his life, and so he can finally be a man that beats up his step dad?

Don’t go into this movie expecting some great movie with amazing special effects, or even great acting. The effects and music seem to come straight out of the 80’s, hell so does most of the acting. And what would you really expect from Andy Samburg and Danny McBride? The movie tho is amazing, its funny, its goofy and it actually has a pretty great story to it. The ending is also not what you would expect.

The Next Karate Kid (1994)

The Next Karate Kid is the 4th and last of the original movies and the only one not to star Ralph Maccio. Mr Miyagi at a commemoration for WW2 soldiers Mr. Miyagi meets the widow of an old officer and gets to know her granddaughter.

The movie sounds good, but really it is just the story of an angry girl Mr. Miyagi tries to teach karate in order to help her deal with the loss of her parents. This in itself would be fine but many of the jokes in the movie are essentially about how he has no experience with girls and their problems. This isn’t on either actor, both Pat and Hillary Swank play their parts very well. I think the biggest issue was the movie was written with no real sense of direction. It has its moments and I don’t agree the movie is horrible, but it is the worst in the series. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)

This may be the longest title I have ever reviewed. Like the actual title not the movie length. The movie is a weird sort of romantic comedy. Steve Carrell plays a guy trying to find the one that got away, his high school sweetheart. keira knightley plays a woman just trying to get home to her family.  And why are they doing this? Well in about three weeks the world is ending because a huge rock from space is going to wipe out all life on Earth.

For once in a rare twist a movie about armageddon handles it in a realistic but fun way. For example early on there is a family and friends party, but weirdly this normally classy and uptight group is now swingers doing heroin teaching small children to chug booze. I mean I get it, the world is ending, have a good time. Another man they run into doesn’t want to go to hell so he hires a hit man, to kill him.

All in all the movie is fun if not a bit odd, but worth a watch. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Goon (2011)

Goon is the story of a bouncer that has a gay brother and a friend with a big mouth at a local hockey game. When a guy from the opposing team gets tossed in the box for fighting in typical fan fashion his friend lets fly with some nasty obscenities and hand gestures only for the player to jump out of the box to attack and calling him a fag. Our man Doug doesn’t like this and demands he takes the word back, and when this demand is denied he beats the ever loving crap out of him. He also discovers a new job as a hockey player.

Good you see is the movie of Doug “The Thug” Glatt, bouncer turned hockey player. His job? Take out those that would get a little rough with his fellow players. and he is damn good at it. He also happens to be one of the nicest guys on Earth, to the point that he at a few points apologizes to a few guys or even a hey nice fight. It was actually nice to see Seann William Scott play someone besides Stiffler and he did it very well. The movie isn’t perfect and honestly being a hockey fan really helps. In fact if you aren’t a hockey fan you should probably skip it since much of the fun comes from being a hockey fan. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Friends with Benefits (2011)

Friends with benefits is essentially that thing everyone tries at some point that doesn’t work. You know a two friends decide they need a lil something something and help each other out and poof, someone catches feelings and wrecks the whole thing. This isn’t real life tho, so its both of them.

The movie is as you would imagine full of jokes, sexual innuendo and brief nudity. So ladies, ever wanted to see Justin’s butt here is your shot. Men knew about Mila years ago so I feel no need to mention it. But you know…her butt as well.

Another amazing and unexpected part of the movie is Woody Harrelson playing one of the best gay characters in recent movie history. He is fun and hilarious and adds quite a bit to the movie  despite having a pretty limited role.

The actual story is pretty basic. Both have rough breakups , eventually meet and become friends have a few drinks and a bad idea becomes a good idea and things escalate from there. The movie isn’t the best but it is quite good. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Details (2011)

The Details is an odd movie in the sense that it is a comedy, but not really in that ha ha this is funny sense, but more in the huh, its funny how things work out sense. The movie starts out with a doctor having the grass in his yard fixed. Just a regular guy, with a regular wife and child. Sure the usual marriage problems are present and the day to day stuff is going on. Everything is pretty average tho. The next morning he wakes up to discover the new grass is messed up and he sets out to discover why, and the answer is a raccoon.

Everything in this movie can be traced back to this. One mans desire to fix his lawn and a raccoon doing raccoon things for food. One mans choice will change the lives of families. I won’t give away the details since obviously it would spoil the entire movie since the entire plot revolves around what happens after this. The movie is far from perfect, but then again so is life and the movie does an excellent job at showing that even with the best intentions things can easily go very differently than one would want. There are some good laughs to be had as well, but the real bread and butter of this movie is simply that on some level you will both love and hate the characters while empathizing with them. Ash vs Evil Dead (series)

I came late to the party on this one and just recently caught up on seasons one and two. Rather than doing each season by itself I figured I would just give my thoughts on the series in general.

Only counting the movies this is based around the last one came out in the early 90’s, and for those not old enough to really know the first Evil Dead is pretty much the definition of a movie that was made and became a cult classic that nobody could have seen coming. I can’t imagine they made this thinking ” Ok guys thats a wrap, lets sit back and wait to make a couple million, a few sequels and in about 30 years a television show.” I mean maybe that happened but I seriously doubt it.

Later movies took on a much less serious tone and I think thats because by the time I saw Evil Dead I thought the movie was hilarious not scary. Fast forward to Ash vs Evil Dead. This show is stupid, ridiculous and serves absolutely no purpose. And I can not wait for season 3. If you said hey Savior what would you want in an Evil Dead television show, this would be it. The entire show is based around Ash doing mostly stupid stuff, hitting on women, getting drunk, and killing deadites in gory and ridiculous ways. One of my favorite lines is him driving along yelling about how maybe he shouldn’t be driving and he may not have a fancy license from the DMV but at least he is drunk. Numerous times he will talk about how things can’t get worse and this always means things will get worse. Any fan of the old movies will like this show. Sadly it is also one of the most illegally downloaded shows out there, so please, it is on Netflix, go watch it there. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
