Planetside 2 (PS4)

download (1)

So me and @torstenvblog have been trying to find a game to play recently, and with Dead by Daylight being free this month on PSN we started there, and well you can read to see how that went. We then said let’s try Planetside 2, which me and Torsten actually have conflicting opinions on. See he hates it and used some, colorful, terms to describe it. Full disclosure he died, a lot and often.

On the other hand there is me, I also died quite a bit to be 100% honest but unlike him I got better as time went on. The game has some huge maps, that for a free game look pretty damn good. Admittedly Warframe is still the pinnacle of free games in my opinion, in case you are looking for a bench mark. Planetside 2 also comes nowhere near that mark. The looks and sounds however are nothing to sneeze at however.

The controls function just fine as well, and in out time playing I never really had any issues that I would consider game breaking or even annoying. The layout is pretty standard, so really its hard to mess up and the aiming speed is always going to be subjective to how goo or bad it is, so tasters choice there.

The game however isn’t great and suffers from some flaws. First, it gives you no real guidance on what you should be doing. You pick a faction, but it doesn’t really tell you anything about them. I googled them prior which seems to be your only option. The game then tosses you right in with no explanation on how to even get into battle or how to really even find one. I wouldn’t call it hard to figure out, but I’ve been paying games longer than many of my readers have been alive and I mean that in a very literal way. One of my first memories is of sitting with my dad playing asteroids on Intellivision and thinking the NES was the greatest thing to ever be invented because the graphics were amazing. @torstenvblog was a bit more confused than I was, he is also a bit younger and a bit less experienced. To say its a huge problem would be an exaggeration, to say it is not a problem or could not be a problem would be a lie.

The game however with some practice and time is quite a bit of fun. I found myself using a jet pack to maneuver up a mountain to sneak around the side of a base to take a location or fighting with 5 or 6 other guys up a mountain path trying to push our way to a building wishing our idiot air support would fly over and hit something. There are long bouts of nothingness on huge maps followed by intense moments of fighting and that is where the game is very hit or miss. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Nintendo Killing Rom Sites

download

Yup, in recent months Nintendo has sued 2 huge rom sites ( more on that here) which I get, from a business sense they need to. They are selling their own emulator machines with the NES and SNES classics and the rumored N64 classic. It wouldn’t make sense to let people give away the games they themselves are attempting to sell. On the flip side, it isn’t easy to find the games we all loved growing up. Most of the time finding them isn’t easy. It has gotten easier in the internet era obviously. Gone are the days of hitting flea markets and such in hopes of finding your favorite game. Granted it is still fun and I love doing it. The hunt is actually half the fun.

Sadly sometimes the game you want is just impossible to find, enter game emulators and roms. Just pop those suckers onto your computer, maybe handheld or one of the aforementioned classics Nintendo released and away you go.

Now however out of fear of legal action from Nintendo some sites are shutting themselves down. Emuparadise is the latest site to stop shelling out retro games, tho this one is self-imposed. PC Mag has the full story. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Superman and The Witcher

According to various sources, Henry Cavill also know as Super Man would love to play Geralt, also known as The Witcher in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of, of course, The Witcher. He has also admittedly to no only playing the games he has also read the comics which the games are based on. For more info feel free to clock here. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

How to Pronounce NES

images (2)

So in news from Nintendo, there is an offical way to pronounce NES as in Nintendo NES.  It won’t surprise pretty much anyone to discover the answer is, “Ness.” It turns out Warioland Gold has resume section that explains it. You can find the full details here.

The real question tho is, are you surprised? Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Euro Truck Simulator 2

This game in theory, is dumb as hell. Hey let’s make you drive a truck, following actual European traffic laws, while delivering goods, for no other reason than to buy better stuff than to do it again. Seriously, tell me in theory this game shouldn’t be garbage.  However, the game is actually quite fun and amazing. I don’t know how or why. But it is. The game is exactly what I described, and it isn’t even graphically amazing. It is simply relaxing to just drive your truck around.

Here are some issues tho I had with it. I have never been to Europe. So I don’t really understand their traffic laws. That being said, I am 100% positive no cop on earth is going to nail me only for speeding while I am driving down the wrong side of the highway. Not to mention some times my trailer would hit shit and get stuck on stuff that doesn’t seem to exist at all.

The game tho is weirdly fun and is aside from backing up a damn trailer is quite simplistic, but is just fun and relaxing, and I do appreciate the ability to stick music into the sound folder and play music on the radio. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

No Man’s Sky Next

Oh No Man’s Sky, we meet again. By now you all know the history with this game and Hello Games. We aren’t going to waste much time on that but will just dive into the game itself.

The basics haven’t changed. You will spend a ton of time wandering around collecting various minerals simply finding stuff to build or discover. This hasn’t changed and basically never will. Nobody however expected it to I hope. It’s also quite fun, and now the base building is important enough to be worth it and even is easy enough to teleport around to make it worth it. And most importantly, we have true multiplayer. Your friends can now join you and help build an awesome base, fight pirates or simply just wander aimlessly. The game as a few of my friends out it, is finally fun. Now I enjoyed the day one version but admittedly it had its issues, many of which are now fixed. That being said, its Hello Games.

Yup there is a but coming. The game has an issue. While playing with friends, I am bopping around my new base and boom, I am disconnected. No big deal it happens. The issue is this happens a lot, and while I don’t know if it’s an issue on PC I can confirm it happens on both Xbox and PS4 and it happens a lot. I am talking double ten plus an hour at times a lot. It isn’t truly a deal breaker but I can’t lie it has driven me away from the game at times. It also does seem to me an issues on some planets more than others for me as well. I have a base I built that I essentially can’t go near because I get tossed from my game constantly, but if I am anywhere else in the solar system I can play just fine it seems. This may just be a coincidence tho.

The game is fun, and I am having more fun than ever playing with friends, but damn this new issue may keep me away. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Guts And Glory (PS4)

download (8)

Guts and Glory is a PC game and recently popped up on PS4 surprisingly. I say surprisingly because the game is pretty messed up. The game is all about getting your character through obstacle courses. Some times in a park, or a small city or maybe in a sort of camp ground. The courses are made up of spinning saw blades, flying arrows, cannon balls and other assorted things to kill you. I’ve been shot in the head with arrows, been blown to pieces by landmines and even had my head blown off with a cannon ball.

The game has its issues, for example the controls aren’t very good. The are kind of clunky, and the games physics can be wonky to say the least. The game does have one big thing going for it tho. The game is fun. That is it, the game is just dumb fun. For $15 if you like a semi gory type game that serves no real purpose, this game may be for you. If not, should probably skip this one. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Games I Hate to Enjoy.

Some games you love to plays, some games you hates. But every so often there is just a game that you  enjoy, but you don’t know why. Here are some of mine.

download (1)

Dark souls 2,Scholar of the First Sin. This is probably the worst of the Soulsborne series.  I also for some reason insist on the fact that I need to finish this damn game before I will allow myself to play through Dark Souls 3. This godforsaken game is the bane of my existence. I can’t explain it tho, for tall the faults of this game, I strangely enjoy it.

Crusader Kings 2. There isn’t much wrong with this game, I love the concept. You play the part of a family, make decisions for your country. I enjoy this game even if it is slow as hell. The problem? I SUCK as this game. Like real bad. I like the game, but no matter how much I play, I never seem to improve. Crusader Kings 2 (PC)

download (2)

Pretty much the entire Telltale Games series. The idea is simple, take a popular series, create a story and turn it into a choose your own adventure video game where mostly your decisions mean next to nothing, but we pretend they do. The story is usually pretty good, but I can’t explain why I enjoy this simple formula, and many times I find myself finishing just because I want that easy platinum.

So what about you guys? What games do you enjoy that you can’t quite figure out why? Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Star Ocean Anamensis (Mobile)

download

Star Ocean Amanesis is a mobile game from Square Enix and developed by Tri-Ace for android and iOS. Like many mobile games this one is free to play and features the characters from the Star Ocean games of the past. It follows the events of Integrity and Faithlessness and involves being attacked by pirates and memory loss. I won’t spoil too much since the game is free to play so i won’t spoil it to much.

The game board basically alternates back and forth between story tiles and battles where you collect items and such. As per usual you progress thru the game and collect characters and more powerful weapons. You don’t need to you money to do this, but as always it will make things much easier and more powerful. The game so far for me hasn’t come across as pay to win, but the best stuff isn’t easy to come across either and I would much rather play the more traditional Star Ocean games. Suffice it to say I will be playing it, but I won’t be sinking any cash into it. The game however does look and sound nice. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Empire In Ruins, Revisited.

Empires In War is an Indy title for PC getting ready for release in the coming months from the company Hammer and Ravens.

Many of you may remember a while back when we first looked at the game Empires in Ruins (Preview) The guys over there have been hard at work getting things together for release and the EGX event in September. Sadly living in the United States I won’t be attending the event to visit them and check things out. They were however kind enough over the weekend to hook me up with a beta to check out.

A few things to note, the beta is on whats known as a workbench map. It is basically just there for test purposes and isn’t in the full game. Another thing is pretty much everything started out unlocked and there was no tutorial. A bit of fooling around tho and I got the hang of it. I just wanted to say up front, I didn’t play anything close to a full version of the game. I can honestly say tho, I am already impressed and looking forward to more.

The game itself looks good. Fantastic in fact. Each character and building carefully created with care.

DiovUxoX0AAo72i.jpg

This is just one example I swiped off their Twitter page. I do recommend you check them out over there, they are pretty good about posting updates about what they are doing.

Another part of this I absolutely loved was the music. I rarely say this about games, the music for me is usually just there for me but I actually found myself looking forward to the next wave simply because I liked the music that sounded to me like a sort of hybrid bagpipe rock music sort of deal.

Now the part why most of you are probably still reading, the actual game play. The beta itself. It only showed the real-time combat portion of the game, and none of the story. You start with a small amount of resources to get you started. You can build what you want to survive the first wave or two, it’s up to you really. I won’t tell anyone what to do here that is on you. You two builders will get these built pretty fast, then you can get to the action. As your towers protect your main building from enemies you will get some gold to help you build new ones. The first wave for me consisted of these guys.

Empires In Ruins 7_21_2018 11_25_39 AM

Now I have to admit, I loved reading the descriptions for these guys simply because they made me laugh. I will include a few of my favorites below. As a general rule each wave gets a little harder than the last, with a few easy waves tossed in to give you time to repair or just introduce you to a new enemy. One way consist of a new flying enemy that was pretty easy for me to kill because he was alone, but later multiple showed up and they pretty much ruined my life for a bit. They designed the came in such a way that if you understand how it works and set things up right you can be prepared for anything, if you just randomly toss things down like I did my first go at it you could really do a number on your future. That isn’t to say the game is unforgiving, it is quite fair. The game will just reward you for knowing what each unit does and how to prepare for it.

A good example of this is late game my main building was practically dead, I think I was on wave 18 or 19. I wasn’t prepared for this unit that can use the water to swim around and avoid the roads and it used that to attack me. Game over for me. I couldn’t be mad, this was in no way unfair or cheap. I made a mistake and paid the price.

I must say I have played my fair share of Alpha and Beta versions of games, many with varying degrees of quality. Some being damn near broken to the point I question why they would even let them be played, others they were perfectly playable and I was happy to give my feed back and look forward to seeing how they turn things around. This one however falls into a class all its own. I have never before played a beta where I really didn’t have much to say. I played it for a few hours and never ran into bugs. I never thought the game was unfair towards the player, and even when I thought that dude with the giant hammer or the guys with the muskets did more damage than I liked, it didn’t do anything to stop my enjoyment. They are just stronger units you need to account for,and once I did I was back to killing things. This game is definitely on my must own list when it comes out. Check it out in the Steam Store. Best wishes and may the gaming god bring you glory.
