Goon:The Last of the Enforcers (2016)

The 2nd Goon movie takes place a bit after the first. For a quick refresher you can check out my review of the first one here. Goon (2011) Doug and  Eva are now married and the NHL is having a but of a lock out. The movie starts out with our enforcer friend getting hurt in a fight that he loses, and he loses badly.

This movie is less about hockey and more about Doug and his struggle to come to terms with his life outside of hockey. Suffering from a career ending injury with a kid on the way and working a job in the insurance industry he hates starts to take its toll.

Of course with some training and work he finds his way back on the ice, and the name last of the enforcers will make sense by the end of the movie. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first, but it is funny and fun for hockey fans. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

Oh Lethal Weapon, such a classic. Also may count as a Christmas movie,seriously this thing starts out with a Christmas and even involves people sitting down for Christmas dinner. I can’t say for certain but there may be a discussion to be had on this. Any way moving on to more serious stuff. What happens when you take a veteran officer that hates being on a team and stick in with a young, possibly suicidal officer suffering from the loss of his wife that also hates being on a team? You get the Lethal Weapon franchise.

Riggs and Murtaugh will be thrown together against their will and stumble upon a huge drug trafficking ring. The movie itself is one of the more popular movies from the 80’s and the franchise continued with the last movie coming out in 98, tho a T.V. series did come out recently. The movie is great,action packed and is pretty much as 80’s action as 80’s action gets.

Lethal Weapon however does have its flaws, for example the dialogue at times feels forced and like its trying to hard and the story shouldn’t be looked at too hard, kind of like most movies from its time period. Bets wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Mutant Football League

A long long time ago when I was a little savior I got a game called Mutant League Football. No clue why my parents bought me this, hell it may have been my brothers. So we popped this weird game in, and started to play. WTF were we playing. This dude exploded. My brother passes down the sideline, makes it passed the first down marker. Runs out of bounds to avoid another big hit aaand this guy flys out into space. What..the hell is this.  People are dying, landmines are exploding out of bounds is no longer safe that ref got bribed and needs to die. And this is before half time. The halftime show is you throwing exploding footballs at the marching band and yes if you kill them all you are greeted with the words “New Band Tryouts Monday.” Now many of you may have played this, others may be curious and want to play this. Well if you have a Sega Genesis you can probably find it, or there is Mutant Football League.

Mutant Football League is the spiritual successor to Mutant League Football, tho admittedly more adult to match the times. The addition of full voice ability has added some rather interesting and colorful commentary that is hilarious but crude, it also happens to be the guy from the classic NBA Jam. The game play is simplistic yet fun and the graphics while not AAA level are still nice. The strategy doesn’t come from the Madden style of football mechanics tho. Instead you have dirty plays that are of limited use you will need to time just right. And do you try to kill the opposing teams running backs to prevent them from running, or is their passing game so good you try to kill all their QB in hopes of forcing a forfeit? Or do you do some combination of it all? Either way for the price of $20 you can not go wrong and I encourage anyone to try it out. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Batman: The Telltale Series

I was a bit skeptical going into this one, first because while I like Batman I wouldn’t consider myself a fan. I can take him or leave him. I enjoyed the 90’s cartoon and the older movies but much of the newer stuff or the comics i’m just kind of meh with. That being said, it was a free game on PSN last month (January) so really what did I have to lose?

The game itself is short, I played through the entire thing in a day while taking care of a one year old. Probably took about 10 hours, so I imagine without the one year old it can be done in about 8. Most Telltale games are short tho to be fair, this one is just a little extra short compared to say Game of Thrones Telltales Review or The walking dead (those reviews are coming soon) But you will be treated to an original story created for this series, and as far as I can find an entirely new villain. The series actually takes an entirely new spin on Batman to an extent seeming to take place in a world before the dark night knows of the Joker and just meets Catwoman. I can see how many long time fans may be turned away by this but for a casual such as myself it is actually very well done and fun to see. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition

Any long time followers of the blog know I have a love hate relationship with this game. More on that here Kerbal Space Program. Hardest game for PS4? for the longest time the game was basically broken, and not even in a small way. The only way to really play it was to learn how to manipulate a system that didn’t much work, to the point the company de-listed the game and hired a completely new company to make it. However, how does it stack up? This one will be a bit long if you want a quick is it fixed and good sort of deal, scroll down to the end. If you want the long version where I talk about the PC, the original console version and the enhanced version keep going.

First off, the PC version is the original version and is probably the best version in terms of content. It is further along in development by a bit and has all the mods you can dream of. The controls are nice, the graphics are beautiful and is the definitive version. It also isn’t exactly all that heavy on your computer specs.

The original console version, this thing looked nice but damn was it a broken pile of shit. It would randomly delete your entire game, and not just the one you were working on. All of your save data. The control nodes were kind of like trying to do upper level geometry while drinking whiskey and juggling. Somehow, the game was fun as hell. I played it from the day I bought it until the day the Enhanced version came out.

Kerbal Enhanced Version. I gotta be honest here, this version may be my favorite version. First, I do prefer console games. I love a controller in my hands, tho I do own the PC version. That being said, the enhanced version is far superior to the original. The maneuver nodes work amazing, the ability to switch controls on the fly (pun intended) between rocket and planes in amazing and as always success or failure is just a lot of fun. Open House (2018)

Open House is the story of a young man and his mother that move into a relatives house temporarily following the tragedy of their Husband/father being killed by a driver that has a heart attack and runs off the road and hits him. Yes already this seems a bit over the top. I won’t go to much further into the story, mostly because it would’t take much to spoil but on the drive there is when it starts to get weird.

The acting is actually pretty solid, and it should be noted the movie does contain some nudity so be aware of that if you intend to watch it with children present. The movie itself is pretty basic, not bad but not good. It is actually one of the worse Netflix originals I have seen. That isn’t to say it isn’t worth watching, casual fans of the genre will enjoy it, tho any of the more devout fans will probably be a bit bored. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Long Dark ( Xbox One)

A plane crash, a cold wasteland. The indomitable will to survive. The Long Dark. What possibly is the hardest survival game ever made. You see there is a sandbox mode with a fun little story mode, but the real fun is in the sandbox.

You will be dropped into the wilderness with some basic supplies and thats it. No tutorial, no hints no map telling you wear to go. Just you, the frozen land of Canada and the wilderness. You will need to quickly find wood for a fire and hopfully some shelter before the cold and exhaustion take hold. After that you will need to find warmth, food and any other supplies you can get your hands on.

There will also be a need to go exploring, since things like a rifle, hatchet and other better things aren’t going to be easy to find. You may need to hide out in a cave, or a small fishing shack, where fishing can also be an option. This is a game that is worth checking out, best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Definitely,Maybe (2008)

Definitely maybe is basically the short version of how I met your mother when it comes down to it. A daughter wants to know how her parents that are now going through a divorce met, and her father played my Ryan Reynolds is a bit less than enthusiastic to tell his young daughter the history of his dating life. Hey I can see why, who wants to tell their kids their dating history. The movie isn’t Ryans usual comedy, it is actually a sweet and yet at times sad story of a man that just can’t seem to get the timing down with the love of his life.

The movie does of course have a happy ending as it is above anything a love story, for fans of that the movie is actually great. The story is sweet, and well done. Many people however will be going into this expecting it to be a comedy and will be greatly disappointed. That being said, it is worth a watch. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Caddyshack (1980)

Oh caddyshack, you beautiful classic bastard. Its hard to believe this movie is going on 38 years old. The late Rodney Dangerfield is hilarious playing a brash new member of a very exclusive golf club as a very young Bill Murray plays an obsessed grounds keeper just trying to kill a gopher, and directed by the late great Harold Ramis, so at least he has that going for him. This movie is one of those classic 80’s movies that people today still quote and look at as an all time great and with good reason. People just loved this movie from the very beginning. Even today sitting down to watch it just brings a smile to my face. Any movie fan needs to watch this movie, even if its just for the history. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Brave New Jersey (2016)

A long time ago, in 1938 Orson Welles wrote a radio broadcast heard by millions, that started with something like ” We interrupt this broadcast with a special news bulletin, martian have invaded New Jersey” or something similar. People went nuts and began to flea their homes in Panic. That at least is how the story goes, tho there isn’t much evidence to support it. There are some news headlines that have largely been accepted as the news papers attempt to discredit the newly emerging radio news.

This movie however tells the story of a small town in New Jersey as it gave into this alleged hysteria. The movie is quite interesting and paints an amazing picture of just how some people may have acted. Most period piece movies can’t seem to find that line between realism and interesting enough to keep modern people interested, but Brave New Jersey managed to do both. While the movie does have its downtrends and you pretty much know the ending from the opening credits for those interested in history it is a fun movie to watch, tho I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.
