Jaws (1975)

Jaws, the 1975 classic that made multiple generations afraid to even get in swimming pools let alone the ocean. Actually I am pretty sure sharks have died specifically because of this movie, and that isn’t a joke.  As for the story, we all know it. Small island town terrorized by a huge great white shark. New sheriff backs down from the mayor and a whole bunch of people die. The town then hires a shark hunter named Quint to kill it, but they are going to need a bigger boat.

The movie itself for its time was a master piece and to this day stands the test of time. After all, there is a reason that over 40 years later people still watch this movie and it routinely makes best of list right? Tho admittedly I never really got how this was a horror story I suppose I am truly out voted on that one. If you somehow have not seen this movie, stop waiting, hop on Netflix and start watching. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

DeadSpace

deadspace

Lately, researching for my latest writing project, I’ve looked back into the greatest terrors of film, book, and game. A while ago I did a countdown of 5 great horror games to scare the crap out of you. , for which here’s the link to, and covered it briefly. Now I want to get into more in depth and why it was amazing.

DeadSpace is the story of an engineer named Issac Clarke traveling to planet-cracker U.S.S Ishimura as part of a team to discover why they went silent. Issac received a video from his girlfriend and scientist, Nicole on board the derelict ship, that has him worried. After a disastrous landing, Issac’s crew begins discovering the grisly and disturbing events that took place on the ship after finding a religious artifact on the desolate planet of Aegis 7. Violence, insanity, and the rising of horrible Necromorphs- the malformed creatures made from the bodies of the crew. Suddenly Issac is alone, armed only with a few gadgets, some crafted weapons, and his space suit, he has to find Nicole while fighting the monstrous horde, religious zealots, and no help is coming…

Deadspace does amazing when it comes to sight and sound and building tension. Being in the vacuum of space, hearing nothing but the distant echo of your own footsteps beneath your deep breaths is scary as hell.Visuals like the man weakly bashing his brains out against the door is freaky as hell. Artistically I love the architecture of the environments,  the gory details of the creatures, and the vastness and dread of deep space. The game play is fun, simple, and close to RE4 with a few new twists. With all the means to dismember the Necromorphs, we still don’t feel too overpowered which is mistake the Resident Evil games made later. The story gets better as it goes, leading to a great twist at the end. The only real flaw I see is the final boss, which is epic in stature is kinda lame challenge-wise and there are some parts that are a real pain in the ass, especially Chapter 5. Issac is mute through the game which didn’t bother me but will probably bother some. In the end, I highly recommend the first DeadSpace and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Gremlins

gremlins

So again from Savior and I, Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Now here’s a movie for all those kids who wanted a puppy, kitten, or pony for Christmas and why taking care of your pets is important…if you don’t they will turn into monsters and try to kill you.

This Christmas adventure begins with a struggling inventor who visits a old Chinese antique shop in his travels, coming across the perfect present for his son Billy. An adorable creature that makes cute singing noises and is heart meltingly cute. Against the owners wishes, the inventor takes the creature and brings him back home. This creature has rules though: no sunlight, no water, and don’t feed it after midnight. Simple right? Well, Billy accidentally let’s his new pet Gizmo get wet, and something strange happens: Gizmo reproduces. However these new offspring aren’t as sweet and lovable as Gizmo, leading into trickery letting these  annoying little bastards to eat after midnight, transforming into violent, hideous creatures that are out for mayhem and chaos…

Gremlins is a classic anytime of year. The characters are memorable, the effects are great, and it does well to mix black comedy with some fair scares. I highly recommend this movie for all ages this Xmas. May the gaming gods bring you glory and don’t feed your damn mogwai after midnight.

Die Hard 2: Die Harder

die hard 2

So Die Hard was truly the greatest Christmas movie of all time, I think we can all agree, but how can we surpass it? Well, we can’t. But Die Hard 2 was pretty damn awesome all the same.

A year after the most hectic Christmas John McClane ever had, he’s at Dulles Airport waiting for Holly who’s coming in from LA to spend Christmas. But again John’s luck is shit as a rogue group of militants take over the airport, trying to free a drug lord in custody. Airport security tries to intervene but they suck and the “army” shows up but in the end it’s up to John McClane to beat these new terrorists, save the airport so Holly can land safely because John McClane kicks ass.

Is the sequel superior to the original? No, not at all. It feels kinda corny and the villain isn’t nowhere near as memorable but it’s still a fun action movie. Bruce Willis is still amazing as McClane and the action scenes are cool. Honestly, it’s a fun movie to watch with the family this Christmas and from us at Saviorgaming, happy holidays, may the gaming gods bring you glory, and yippie ki ay motherfucker.

Merry Christmas

So I was trying to figure out exactly what to do for tonight, maybe a stand up? Or a game? Or how about a movie? Then I released none of those really felt right. See its Christmas eve. Now I am not a religious man outside of the gaming gods and they don’t really have holidays. They love and respect all holidays, but don’t really have any of their own. So tomorrow morning I will wake up with baby savior and the rest of the family, exchange gifts and do all the things most of you will do. Then me and  @torstenvblog will head over to my moms house and have dinner and watch some horror movies as we normally do for Christmas. Yea we have developed some odd traditions over the last few years. So no, tonight I will not use my usual night time post to entertain you with my bad grammar, misspelled words and horrible opinions. Instead I have a request. Some of you will do the same thing I am tomorrow and go out with your families. Enjoy that, maybe have a drink for the Savior. Some of you may just stay home or feel alone. Sit back, grab a snack do your thing and remember you are still awesome and Savior Gaming loves having you around. Even if times are hard they get better. And if you just need a friend, hit one of us up on Twitter, join a stream, drop us a comment on a blog post. We would love to hear from you, best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory, and a Merry Christmas.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

download (4)

I have heard a lot about this movie since its release, but I never had the urge to watch it. My biggest issue with this movie was going in we all knew the ending. Finally however after watching The Last Jedi I sat down and watched Rogue One.

Much of what I heard came down to two main things, one the best part of the movie is the last about 5 minutes when Darth Vader looks like a total bad ass and the CGI for Princess Leia looks like complete garbage. We will get to those two points in a bit.

First, K-2SO is the best character in the movie. Robo dude is just great, he is well written and well acted. He alone made the movie for me. I think many people are far to harsh on this one, don’t get me wrong the movie is far from great but it is solid. The story is fun the characters are pretty interesting and at no point did I really feel like anything was being forced. The movie only suffered from one thing that sadly nothing anyone did could have fixed.

At the end of the day, this was a story fans never asked for because it never needed to be told. We knew how it ended already. There was no way this movie could have been done in such a way where the audience could truly be invested in any of the characters because we knew by the end they were all going to die and the plans for the Death Star would end up with the rebels and that it would later be destroyed by Luke Skywalker. Felicity Jones played Jyn Erso amazingly and Diego Luna was great as Cassian and even how much I loved K-2So and how well Alan Tudyk played him it didn’t matter because going in, I knew this was the end of them.

As for Darth Vaders bad ass moment, it wasn’t all that bad ass. It was cool, but we have seen better from the Franchise and Leia did not look as bad as people made her out to look. Many people seem to have hated this movie because it was a cool thing to do. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The GraveDancers

gravedancers

Almost a decade ago began the After Dark Horrorfest, and the first year had some pretty sweet low budget horror movies made by people that enjoyed the genre. I’m a tad bit rusty on the specifics of this particular movie but I remember some images creeping me out and the plot being a bit more strange than your typical ghost story.

We begin with our three main characters joining together for the funeral of a old college friend after going there own separate ways as is life. During the funeral, they decide a sad ceremony isn’t the way to celebrate there departed pal and well, they decide to share a drink with them at the cemetery after hours and get blitzed and in drunken euphoria they going dancing through the cemetery, wondering into the wrong part where the worst people in town were buried. The spirits of these 3 evil people are pretty pissed some drunks literally went dancing  on there graves and begin haunting them, not stopping until they get there own twisted revenge…

While not the greatest horror movie by any means, there is ambition to it we don’t really see much these days. The plot is strong and interesting, even for a B movie. Some of the effects vary as well as the acting but it works fair enough. The ghosts and there stories were my favorite part. I do recommend picking up a DVD rather than catching it on TV because watching it on TV, it gets chopped to hell, but it is worth a watch all the same. May the gaming gods stop you from drunken grave dancing.

5 books that scared the s$it out of me

monster book

People underestimate the raw power of books sometimes. I once did until I found one that scared the shit out of me. It was a different feeling than getting scared by a movie, more intimate somehow. here’s a list of books that genuinely creeped the shit out of me and made me want to bring the joy to others, in no particular order, lets dive in with…

cujo book 1. Cujo by Stephen King- ok, this was a tough call because many of King’s stories freaked the hell out of me but Cujo left a weird impact on me. I’m nervous around dogs as it is, so the idea of being at the mercy of a massive, rabid, death tank of a dog just…no, hell no. Cujo

let me in bk Let the Right One In (aka Let Me in) by John Ajvide Lindqvist- besides being a freaky ass vampire story with interesting lore and characters behind it, it’s a deep tale of friendship and vulnerability that I will cover after I watch the film, but I can tell you it won’t let you down if you’re scared of vampires.

good happy child 3. A Good and Happy Child by Justin Evans- I’ve never been religious or brought up with strong religious beliefs but this possession story caught me off guard.  Rather than heavy theatrics we get a much more quiet and more unsettling series of mind games through the 1st person perspective of someone possessed by the devil. If you like smart, thoughtful horror, this is for you.

Hbh1  4. The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker- if you loved the movie Hellraiser, this is the book that Barker directly turned into the film but his master of giving the diabolical Cenobites a presence the movie can’t match, this novella is worth a hit for the true fans of the movie. The Hellbound Heart  Hellraiser Movie review

1984 5. 1984 by George Orwell- this book is debatable as horror but once you read it and take a look at the world around us in 2017 where we always have eyes on us and Big Brother is everywhere, you may feel differently. Before reading 1984 however, I recommend reading Animal Farm first, to which here’s yet another link to check out my review. Animal Farm

This has just been a small list of books that scared the shit out of me, but there are more but those are for another time. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Ready Player One trailer

ready player one

I’m sorry it took me a while to talk about what we’ve seen for Spielberg’s highly anticipated Sci fi epic based of the highly acclaimed book. I can’t say I have any experience with it, never having read the book. From the trailer I gather it’s about a young man in a broken down world where virtual reality is the only real escape, The Oasis. The creator of which is dying and fortune and control of the Oasis lies in the one who can find the Easter Egg inside of the Oasis.

My first impression is this going to be a beautiful looking movie. The special effects look like the greatest of video game cut scenes and the sets look impressive. I’m really intrigued by the world itself and I think it’s going to be a huge lure for many. I can’t get a feel for the characters yet but the opening monologue was solid. I’ll be keeping an eye on it and I’m sure Savior and I will go see it in theaters when the time comes. Until then were just some thoughts and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

5 characters I wanted in injustice 2

injustice 2-1

Normally I’m not a huge fighting game fan but I do love a good old fashioned ass kicking from time to time. That being said, I love Injustice 2 and I’m stoked for the release of release of the third fighter pack characters but I can’t help being kinda bummed by some characters I was really hoping for. In no particular order, lets dive in with…

mera 1. Mera- don’t get me wrong, I was tickled pink when Black Manta was revealed but I think Mera could have brought something unique to the table with her hydro abilities.

beastboy 2. Beast boy- being able to shape shift into animals during a fight would kick so much ass, whether it’s changing into a bear for a epic maul attack or a hawk for a last minute escape- not to mention finishing a ultimate attack as a T-rex. How can you go wrong?

capt boomerang 3. Captain Boomerang- we had Cold, leader of the Rogues but he ain’t my favorite Captain of the group. I always had a thing for Boomerang and with his assortment of weaponized boomerangs could make for some sweet combos and plus you fill the quota of movie tie in character.

larfleeze 4. Larfleeze- Agent Orange himself, holding the entirety of the Orange Lantern Corps in his lantern, making for some really sweet possibilities for combos.

smoke  5. Smoke- I think Smoke would have been a sweet choice with his arsenal of smoke attacks that famously wreck people in Mortal Kombat. Also it didn’t make much sense to have two electric and two ice characters when someone like Smoke could add some variety.

May the gaming gods bring you glory and happy ass kicking.
