Top 7 Obscure PS1 Horror Games That You Probably Haven’t Played — 16-Bit Dad

Horror games have been a huge part of the gaming industry since the 16-Bit era with the likes of Sweet Home, a Horror RPG game that was also the inspiration for Resident Evil. However, due to the popularity of the aforementioned Resident Evil, as well as Silent Hill, many horror games went largely unnoticed and…

5 Things I learned Playing Monster Hunter World

download (3)

Playing Monster hunter world taught me a few things, a few things I felt might be worth sharing. I am by no means an expert but they helped me out greatly. I also spent my time mostly playing with a friend not doing these things, so I saw the difference it made first hand.

  1. Upgrade you armor. The items you collect will be pretty useless soon anyway because you will be collecting better items or upgrading. Use what you have, and don’t be afraid to use your armor spheres. They are easy enough to get more of.
  2. There is no reason no to ALWAYS be working on bounties. You can be working on 6 at a time and they are always active regardless of what you are doing on a hunt. Picking ones for harvesting ore or flora (things you will be doing anyway) are quick ways to be collecting both resources and Spheres you need.
  3. Upgrade you Palico. This one may seem like a no brainer, but I have seen a few people wandering around in Grade A armor with weapons I have never seen with cats wearing basic stuff. These little guys are  life saver, assuming you treat them right. Plus they are cute as hell.
  4.  There are a ton of guides on YouTube for weapons, find one for your weapon of choice ( they are all viable, find one you like and use it) and learn about it. The difference between being okay with a weapon and being great with a weapon makes a world of difference. Learn from those that came before you. Chances are the weapon you like has a move or combo you aren’t aware of.
  5. And last but not least, unless you absolutely have to, never heal with a potion. a mega potion heals much more health and can be made with a potion and honey, 2 simple ingredients easily found. Between the ease of finding them and the ability to customize your loadout in the item box to change at the push of a button it shouldn’t be often you are healing with potions. A good trick is when you can, bring 10 mega potions, 10 potions and 10 honey with you. This will give you 10 mega potions to heal with and the ability to make more.

And that is all, I hope that helps you out at least a little in the beginning. Bets wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Monster Hunter World (PS4)

download (2)

I have a weird history with the Monster Hunter series in the past. I never loved or hated them, which is probably why I played a few. I jumped at the chance to play the Monster Hunter World Beta, but I wasn’t in any real hurry to buy the full release. After playing the beta it was simply another Monster Hunter game for me. It still is by the way, and before anyone jumps on me admittedly it is the best Monster Hunter I have played, Monster Hunter World is still Monster Hunter.

The idea is still the same as always, kill stuff, get new gear, kill more stuff repeat. This isn’t a bad thing, its what the series is. It is why the fan base plays the game and it looks and plays better than it ever has before. The game is stunningly beautiful and the controls are more fluid than they have ever been. Tho seeing creatures disappear inside of rocks and stuff just to smack the hell out of me when the lunge or spin out will always piss me off. Don’t worry tho, its not a bug it’s a feature.  There are some things most reviews I have seen don’t mention, so those are what I will focus on. The game is grind heavy, and I do mean HEAVY. You can spend hours just farming for items to build weapons and armor you need to make equipment you need at the higher level hunts. So if you are easily discouraged or simply hate that sort of thing, this may not be for you.

While there is a story to Monster Hunter World, its very basic and isn’t why most people play the game. If you are looking for a well written in depth story, you probably won’t consider this to be it. It isn’t bad by the way, but its really only about 30 hours or so and doesn’t exactly have a ton of twist and turns. It is almost like a tutorial to introduce you to the mechanics and ease you into why people play the monster hunter series, which is to hunt huge monsters with huge weapons and create characters capable of killing them.

Monster Hunter World is the most approachable game in the series, but it isn’t exactly approachable for casual players. That isn’t to say the game us hard or impossible but it does take some getting used to and practice. You aren’t likely to have success picking random hunts and mashing buttons while picking armor and weapons you think look cool. I have a friend that tries that and keeps asking me to help him kill stuff, then fails the hunt when stuff one shot kill him. He gets a pissed and I tell him why he dies then he doesn’t listen anyway, and it makes me laugh. Anyway, for me the game isn’t worth $60, but the $20 on a sweet sale I found makes it worth it. I know others that spent $60 and never looked back. This game is one of those games that is worth different to different people specifically because of what it is. I won’t say to buy it or not, but if you can rent or play with a friend if you have never experienced the Monster Hunter series before because it is vastly different than what most people have played. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

American Horror Story

ahs1

A few days ago I talked about the American Horror Story: Apocalypse teaser and I think it’d be a good idea to cover what I know of the series.

Season 1 is simple in concept, almost cliche, as we see a family with issues move into a new house in California. Viven, the mom and wife, had a miscarriage and in the aftermath, her husband Ben had a affair. There teenage daughter Violet acts out. They want peace for there family to heal in there new house, despite the strange neighbor’s and the house’s dark, morbid history. The neighbor’s troubled son Tate and Violet become close as a series of events start happening, leading to Viven getting raped by a freak in a gimp suit. It seems the Murder House may have new victims to add to it’s long list…

I didn’t know what to expect going in, just the popularity. Season 1, while not perfect, is really cool. The characters are flushed out and I actually was invested in them and there plights. Evan Peters as Tate stole the show for me. This is a show that blends aspe of real life fact and fictional horror, making some interesting stories. Where I felt a flaw was the last few episodes of the season, the pacing of the ultimate plot felt off, feeling somehow rushed and lagging at the same time. The end is clever but a little too chipper for me. In the end, season 1- Murderhouse is totally solid and I recommend it to New comers. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Planetside 2 (PS4)

download (1)

So me and @torstenvblog have been trying to find a game to play recently, and with Dead by Daylight being free this month on PSN we started there, and well you can read to see how that went. We then said let’s try Planetside 2, which me and Torsten actually have conflicting opinions on. See he hates it and used some, colorful, terms to describe it. Full disclosure he died, a lot and often.

On the other hand there is me, I also died quite a bit to be 100% honest but unlike him I got better as time went on. The game has some huge maps, that for a free game look pretty damn good. Admittedly Warframe is still the pinnacle of free games in my opinion, in case you are looking for a bench mark. Planetside 2 also comes nowhere near that mark. The looks and sounds however are nothing to sneeze at however.

The controls function just fine as well, and in out time playing I never really had any issues that I would consider game breaking or even annoying. The layout is pretty standard, so really its hard to mess up and the aiming speed is always going to be subjective to how goo or bad it is, so tasters choice there.

The game however isn’t great and suffers from some flaws. First, it gives you no real guidance on what you should be doing. You pick a faction, but it doesn’t really tell you anything about them. I googled them prior which seems to be your only option. The game then tosses you right in with no explanation on how to even get into battle or how to really even find one. I wouldn’t call it hard to figure out, but I’ve been paying games longer than many of my readers have been alive and I mean that in a very literal way. One of my first memories is of sitting with my dad playing asteroids on Intellivision and thinking the NES was the greatest thing to ever be invented because the graphics were amazing. @torstenvblog was a bit more confused than I was, he is also a bit younger and a bit less experienced. To say its a huge problem would be an exaggeration, to say it is not a problem or could not be a problem would be a lie.

The game however with some practice and time is quite a bit of fun. I found myself using a jet pack to maneuver up a mountain to sneak around the side of a base to take a location or fighting with 5 or 6 other guys up a mountain path trying to push our way to a building wishing our idiot air support would fly over and hit something. There are long bouts of nothingness on huge maps followed by intense moments of fighting and that is where the game is very hit or miss. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Devil’s Hunt: New Gameplay Trailer — All The PlayStation You’ll Ever Need.

I’m not freaking out you’re freaking out. The dark and gritty feel of Devil’s Hunt is straight bad ass! The fighting looks to bring the pain with ferocious and frantic combat but I am a little worried about the voice over. Remember this is all pre-alpha footage. Developer Layopi Games already has me enticed with […]

As many of you may be aware Margot Kidder died back in May. While it was at first thought, or at least announced, that she died peacefully in her sleep, her family and Park County Coroner Richard Wood confirmed she died of “Self inflicted drug an alcohol overdose.”

Margot Kidder reportedly has spent her life suffering from mental illness including bipolar disorder. For more info feel free to check Screen Rant. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Mystery Men

mystery men Some love Batman, some love Spider-man. I love Mystery Men.

Mr Furious, The Shoveler, and the Blue Rajah (who doesn’t wear blue by the way) are superheroes in Champion City that get there asses kicked every night while the city’s flagship superhero, Captain Amazing, gets the glory. Well, Captain Amazing is dealing with a peculiar problem: he’s too good at his job and his pot of villains is drying up.So, using his alter ego, he influences the asylum to release his arch nemesis, Casanova Frankenstein. Casanova one ups the Captain and this trio of losers is left to free him. After recruiting The Bowler, The Spleen, and the Invisible Boy and getting a new arsenal and training from the Sphinx, can this team of average Joes save there city and Captain Amazing?

I love this dorky ass movie. Everyone is funny as hell; Ben Stiller is over the top, Hank Azaria is great as the cutlery throwing Rajah, and the Spleen’s killer farts. I love the music and costumes. This is a really cool, underrated superhero comedy with a good message I recommend checking out. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Nintendo Killing Rom Sites

download

Yup, in recent months Nintendo has sued 2 huge rom sites ( more on that here) which I get, from a business sense they need to. They are selling their own emulator machines with the NES and SNES classics and the rumored N64 classic. It wouldn’t make sense to let people give away the games they themselves are attempting to sell. On the flip side, it isn’t easy to find the games we all loved growing up. Most of the time finding them isn’t easy. It has gotten easier in the internet era obviously. Gone are the days of hitting flea markets and such in hopes of finding your favorite game. Granted it is still fun and I love doing it. The hunt is actually half the fun.

Sadly sometimes the game you want is just impossible to find, enter game emulators and roms. Just pop those suckers onto your computer, maybe handheld or one of the aforementioned classics Nintendo released and away you go.

Now however out of fear of legal action from Nintendo some sites are shutting themselves down. Emuparadise is the latest site to stop shelling out retro games, tho this one is self-imposed. PC Mag has the full story. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
