Unbreakable

unbreakable  Glass trailer 1 was my most anticipated and favorite trailer from SDCC 2018. I loved Split and was excited to jump into the first entry of this trilogy.

Unbreakable is the story of David Dunn (Willis) who is the sole survivor of a train crash that killed everyone on board but miraculously be unscathed . Not a scratch. As the story progresses we discover there’s a link to David’s unhappiness and how he survived the crash; throughout his life he’s almost never been ill nor ever been injured except for once in a near death experience where he nearly drowned. He’s strong and he has a strong instinct about people he was never able to explain. He meets a strange, disabled man named Elijah Prince (Jackson) is enticed by Dunn. Prince was born with a bone disorder, he’s super fragile while Dunn seems nearly indestructible.  Terrible things have happened to Dunn over his life and every time he has been the sole survivor. Prince theorizes Dunn is a real life superhero and tells him how he knew there was someone like him all along, an exact opposite. Is Prince a mad man or is David Dunn a real life superhero?

This movie earned it’s reputation as one of Shyamalan’s best and it is extremely refreshing in the crowded superhero market. This isn’t an action movie but a really well done character piece that dips into the superhero lore. Willis and Jackson are amazing with a good supporting cast. The music was cool. Visually it looked great; I liked the uses of Green for Dunn and Purple for Glass throughout. The pacing is slow to start, but once the two main leads interact than it really picks up. It’s  a great movie that brings a superhero story to a very grounded, relateable place and I highly recommend it. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Conjuring 3 to Start Filming in 2019

The conjuring 3, another movie in The Conjuring Universe is expected to start filming net year according to Screen Rant. With The Nun having just released and Annabelle 3 expected out next summer it seems like we are in for at least a couple more years even tho the movies seem to be less and less about telling the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren and more about simply creating a horror series. Either way it should be interesting, best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Ultimate Spider-man game

ultimate spider-man

I don’t really talk about Ultimate Marvel that much. I enjoyed Ultimate Fantastic 4: Fantastic / Doom and the The Ultimates but that’s where most of my fuzzy feelings end on the matter. This game opened my eyes…

So it begins with a really quick run through of Ultimate Spider-man lore and immediately a boss fight, Venom chasing down Parker at a rained out football game. Through the game we switch perspectives as Spider-man and Venom as S.H.I.E.L.D, OsCorp hunt you down but it all comes down to the grudge match between the two.

Some of Ultimate’s general story choices always bothered the shit out of me like the Black Suit not being a alien, Green Goblin being lime green HellBoy that throws fireballs, and Peter Parker being Carnage. How Venom is portrayed as more of a mindless brute that just hungers is enough to piss off any true old school Spidey fan. That being said the story isn’t great but passable.

The game’s graphics go for a bright comic book aesthetic which fits. Playing as Spider-man is a serious down grade from the awesome Spider-man 2 game. There’s no real combat combos, the web swinging feels clunky by comparison, and instead of the previous game’s cool dodge mechanics, you  just jump out of the way. As for Venom, you brawl with your fists and tentacles as well as a hell of a super jump. The problem is your health bar dwindles and you have to feed- a lot. Venom’s chase sections are a pain in the ass compared to Spidey’s. The villain roster is nice with the likes of Shocker, Electro, Goblin, Beetle, Rhino, Silver Sable and Carnage. Would I recommend it- not unless you are a fan of the Ultimate comics honestly. Before this game and after, there are better Spider-man games out there. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Crystal Chronicles Remake

It was recently revealed that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will be remastered for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. The original was released for the Gamecube and was multiplayer but was honestly a bit odd in that it required everyone to have the GameBoy Advance. Thankfully this time around you won’t need that, so look for that in 2019. Check here for more details.

In other Final Fantasy news that honestly at this point shouldn’t surprise anyone, it seems like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be missing from the Tokyo Game Show. This most likely means there won’t be any real news and definitely no release date until 2019 at the earliest. To me tho the FF7 hype train is long gone and even most hardcore fans like myself don’t seem to even care. At this point we simply watch as this dumpster fire unfolds. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Fantastic 4 (2005) the game

f4 game

I fell for the onslaught of movie games pre- MCU and it all boils to being just a kid. I was pretty disappointed with Fantastic 4 (2005) and I was praying for a better experience. Well, it’s a game…pretty much the story follows the movie loosely, only with added villains like Mole Man, Dragon Man, El Diablo, and Puppet Master with Dr Doom as the main bad guy.

We get to play as each member of the Four: Mr Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing. The game doesn’t do bad with most of the characters but Human Torch felt the least under powered of the group and Invisible Woman felt almost OP with her stealth take downs and the push beam from force field. Level design was simple- straight beat em up with some cut scenes and QTEs thrown in for good measure and with the exception of the Torch levels it’s not a bad game, just repetitive. Everyone gets a solo level, then boss and repeat. Graphics are meh and the voice acting ain’t great. It’s an Ok game but nothing fantastic- pun intended. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Superman returns: the game

superman returns the game

There is a lot of movie tie-in games out there. Not so much these days, but when I was a kid every movie seemed to have a damn video game counterpart. Superman Returns stuck with me after all these years because there were some ideas that could have been awesome, and maybe if done now could have been astounding.

The story of the game for Superman Returns doesn’t really follow the movie- at all. The fact Superman comes back to Earth and Lex Luthor is doing something naughty is pretty much where the similarities end. Somehow he finds himself in a Colosseum in space in a fight with Mongul , which is weirdly the tutorial. You escape and go to Earth where you fight Bizzaro, Metallo, and that little creepy  inter-dimensional guy no one but a true comic geek can even pronounce let a lone spell while Luthor does build up stuff to a create a bunch of evil tornadoes…this is the story in a nutshell.

Playing as Superman in a open world isn’t perfect but I have to give the game credit, it works remarkably damn well. You get heat vision, super breath, freeze breath, super speed, flight, and strength and for the most part, they work really well. I like how you really can’t die but you can get weakened but the closer you get to sun, the stronger you get. What does have a health bar is Metropolis itself, which is a fair idea but damn it’s a pain in the ass to maintain. The fights you get into cause a lot of collateral damage. Actual fighting I think sucks. Your vision powers aren’t really effective against enemies on there own and the combos you can do aren’t great but alright. The game never feels fluid, it feels clunky and that hurts the Bizarro fight for example. The final boss is a huge letdown. There is fun here but after a few hours it gets old and repetitive fast. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

My Top 5 Games of This Gen, So Far

Now before this gets started I am in no way claiming any of these games are the actual best games of this generation, tho for one of them the argument can be made. These just happen to be my personal favorites, and as usual in no particular order.

7 Days to Die Revisted I have always had mixed feelings about this game but honestly I have put way more hours into it than I care to admit and I have had a blast with it and friends. Me and my daughter also have spent a lot of time with it because she loves zombies and building things, so it has a special place for me. It isn’t the best game out there and it has many issues, but for me its a favorite.

Stardew Valley is basically Harvest Moon back when it was good. The game is simply amazing, even more so when you consider it was made by one guy. When you want to simply relax, this is a great way to do it. Do a little farming, some fishing or even hunt one of the mines. As a fan of the original Harvest Moon that never got to play the game until the N64 version ( I later went back and played the others) it was great to go back and relive that fun.

Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition is a game that was at first on console basically broke to the point they delisted it, rebuilt it from the ground up with another company, then gave it away to the original buyers for free. The PC version and Enhanced edition however function well and if you are a fan of space and science and have an interest in this sort of thing there is a lot of fun to be had here. Admittedly tho most people will not enjoy this game.

BloodBorne review anyone that follows the blog had to know Bloodborne would make an appearance here. As part of the soulsborne series this is the only PS4 exclusive, it also happens to be one of the best in the series in my opinion. There will always be some debate as to which game in the series is the hardest or the easiest, but for me Bloodborne will probably be my favorite for a long time to come.

Persona 5 may actually be the best game this generation in my opinion. The story and graphics are amazing, the combat is about as flawless as it comes, in fact the game is as close to as perfect as a JRPG can come. Obviously no game is perfect, and every game has its flaws and this is no exception, but for me if you want to talk about best game if this gen this game has to be in the conversation if you want that conversation taken seriously. It doesn’t really win, but it has to be discussed I think. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Daredevil season 3 teaser

Daredevil, season 1 blew my mind. What I saw between Daredevil and Punisher of season 2 was perfectly done; the staircase fight scene maybe one of the best fight scenes I’ve ever seen given towards a superhero story. Sadly because of personal reasons I wasn’t able to finish season 2 and I haven’t seen Defenders but I’m surprised to see his original costume back. I love his monologue in this teaser. I’m hoping Kingpin returns and the rumors of Bullseye coming this season are true. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms trailer

Why Disney, why? Why the hell did the Nutcracker need another dark retelling? Ok, better question, why the hell does the Nutcracker- a ballet- need a movie to begin with? Something like Fantasia where you play the music to a cartoon, no voices just the music, I think that would be awesome but not another Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland clone (by the way I actually liked the movie). Visually it looks nice but you know damn well it’s CGI but I can’t thinking of Alice. Even the lead actress’s dress reminds me of classic Alice. I’d watch it but I’m not expecting much. May the gaming gods bring you glory.
