The Haunting of Silver Falls

haunting_at_silver_falls_feat

The Haunting of Silver Falls is a typical horror movie in every sense of the phrase. The basic plot us a girls parents die, moves to a small town with her Aunt and uncle meets a guy goes to a party. Of course the cops come everyone scatters and the girl finds a mysterious object blah blah blah. The ghost are semi creepy looking and the twist ending is nice and actually unexpected. The acting is well done and unlike most movies I have seen lately the pacing isn’t bad. It does a good job setting everything up but moves along fast enough to stay interesting. On the downside there is very little excitement to the movie, but its never really boring either. If anything the movie suffers from being far to standard and basic, I’m talking white chick at a Starbucks wearing Uggs basic. As always thanks for joining me, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

American Fable

Sometimes a movie is simply boring. This is one of those movies. Well over 50 minutes (over half way) into the movie and really nothing has gone on besides a farmer hanging himself off screen. Only reason the viewer knows it they speak of it. Lots of poor farming families, including the focal point of the family. Typical family. Mom,dad 1 boy and 1 girl. The family secret is dad is hiding a package. Dad gets hurt and mom and broski pick up hiding the package. Small issue, the package is an old guy that the daughter is making friends with. The movie does pick up later but honestly its far to little far to late and is not worth the wait. There are very few movies I will openly say no-one should watch, but this is one of them. The acting is fine, the visuals are nice as is the sound. But the story itself is just horrible and I can’t stress this enough, a very large part of this movie is nothing interesting. As always thanks for your time, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Beyond The Gate

Hey who likes B movies that look straight out of the 80’s that are so bad they are good? If you said yes to that question you will probably like this movie. The acting is somewhere between bad and acceptable and the movie effects would be gorgeous back in 1986. The sound is of pretty good quality while still keeping with the time frame they were aiming for.

The story has a fun concept. Two brothers grew up with an alcoholic for a father. One is the typical loser in a small town the other left home to a bigger city meets a girl and buys a home. Of course dad goes missing for about 7 months and its up to them to reunite and clean out the video store dad bought when they were kids. Having never bought into the new scary DVD format his store is all VHS tapes. For you young people i have included a photo of a VHS tape.

Ok kids you all caught up on what a VHS tape is? Good. Anyway, a long time ago some board games came with one of these relics and you followed along. When they find one such game in dads office they are dragged into what is basically horror Jumanji. I won’t spoil the gory details, and I mean literal gory, but the movie does suffer from a few minor issues. Most notably the pacing. In a short movie, less than an hour and a half, the first hour is basically set up for what amounts to a 20 minute ending. As always thanks for joining me, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

It Follows Review

ItFollows_Quad_Art_1.jpg

It Follows is, as weird as it sounds, the story of a sexually transmitted curse. Once you have it something will follow you and if it catches you it kills you. Now in a weird twist it then works back down the list. I know sounds weird but follow me. Person A gives it to person B. Then B gives it to C. If C dies it will then go after B then after A. The only real escape is to pass it to someone else and hope they pass it to enough people you are safe.

The acting in the movie is solid, while not scary they do a pretty solid job of keeping the suspense up there. There are also some nice plot twist and surprises as well. The real thrill in this for me is it felt like a good old fashioned horror movie. Granted the random nudity and insane body count is missing but that really just helped the movie on this one. As always thanks for joining me, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Conjuring 2

the conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 is another movie based off the allegedly true story of Ed and Lorraine  Warren whom leave their chosen sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a place in North London to help Peggy Hodgson. One day a little girl is caught smoking at school, but during this her friend gives her a spirit board. Now kids being kids of course her and her sister play with it and now their family home is haunted. Now the movie isn’t bad really. In fact any horror fan should watch it. But visually this time around its not as good neither is the sound or acting. Many parts of the movie come across as trying to hard to be scary, for example the over use of things going thud or the chair sliding across the floor and into the kitchen in front of the police that immediately leave and tell the woman to contact a priest. There is also now a random nun floating around the Warren family home that Ed dreamed up then painted which seems like it was added not because it made sense or was needed but simply to help push the struggling story a bit. For all its faults however I would still absolutely suggest seeing the movie. Once again thanks for reading and may the gaming god bring you glory.

The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring

The Conjuring is the allegedly true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren and their investigation of the Perron family. The story goes the Perron family moved into a house that seems like any other house. But as time passes small odd things start occurring that would eventually lead to a full blown poltergeist or demonic possession type scenario. Now I am not saying the story is real or not, nor am I here to debate whether it is or isn’t. The movie itself is pretty well made and is easily one of the creepier movies I have seen in recent memory. The effects are very well done and add to the creep factor. The sound and music are also really well done and do a great job of adding to the ambiance of the movie itself. The actors alone do an amazing job of selling their terror. While far from a perfect movie any fan of horror movie would do well to check this one out. As always thanks for your time, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Legend Review

Legend.jpg

Legend is the first book by David Gemmell in what is known as the Drenai Saga. The story of this book is the drenai are under attack by people from the desert known as the the Nadir. As people gather to defend the wall from attack and await the hero, Druss the Legend. Intermixed with the story of war are many smaller stories about various people manning the wall along with plenty of back story for the world as a whole. You eventually find out that the Nadir are far from evil and actually are victims of many raids by the Drenai as well as other countries and powers. See the story with in this book actually builds for what will become an entire series based around many people and countries and in different time periods within the same world. You can actually read any of the Drenai saga books in any order you want, but I would recommend this one first. As always thanks for reading, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Happening

the happening

The Happening staring Mark Wahlberg is a rather interesting movie. Mark plays a science teacher in a world where a weird phenomenon involving mass suicide on the east cost of the United States.  The movie waste no time at all getting into the meat of the story, the first scene shows two women on a park bench reading when one notices some weird shit going on and the other eventually stabbing herself in the neck with a knitting needle he for whatever reason has in her hair.

That being said with such a starting point as you can imagine there is no real high point or low point to the movie. Now I never really came to a point I wasn’t  interested but I can see why others would. The movie is also pretty graphic which is part of kept me interested. I would avoid this movie tho if you have any issue with dead bodies or suicide in general. However if you don’t the movie is worth watching. Thanks for your time and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Goosebumps PS4 Review

header.jpg

As a kid I grew up reading these books. Not just one or two, me and my brother bought them by the set. Then the choose your own scare books came out and we bought even more. Now I wasn’t expecting a lot from this outside of some cheap nostalgia. This point and click adventure was short, to the point and loaded with nostalgic charm by the truck load. From seeing an actual truck load of Goosebumps paraphernalia at the beginning to a haunted house you can find killer sponges, huge green blobs and many other things I won’t spoil. That being said I do very much mean this game is short. Could probably do it in an hour or two with a decent guide and not much longer without.

The real question for this point and click adventure is not was it good. The question is are you a goosebumps fan? The answer to that question is the answer to whether or not you should buy this game. I for one, was not disappointed. Thanks for your time, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

We Are Still Here

WE-ARE-STILL-HERE_Eloise-and-Fiona-Dagmar.jpg

I’m not going to lie to you, I watched this movie with a friend and we spent the first 40 minutes mocking it to keep ourselves entertained. The story involved a family that just lost their college aged son moving to a remote town to get away from it all. The house they bought they are told used to be a funeral home. What they weren’t told were the owners were selling the bodies and burying empty coffins. This is explained quite early by some neighbors that come to visit. After about the half way point things will finally start to pick up and it actually gets pretty exciting. Some solid death scenes as well as a town conspiracy, or cover up may be a better word. Every 30 years a “darkness” under the house reappears and needs a family. Last time they didn’t get one and the fear now is the darkness will infect the entire town if they don’t get a family this time.

While not the best movie I have seen recently it is far from the worst, and if you can get through the first 40 minutes or so you may really enjoy it. As always thanks for visiting, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
