28 Days Later

28 days later I’ve been touched by a lot of amazing movies over my 27 years on Earth (as well as some lame movies). As time goes on, our feelings change, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst. 28 Days is one of those very, very few that hasn’t lost the profound impact on me all these years later.

It all begins with good intentions gone awry. A group of animal activists break into a lab and free a group of test chimps, unaware of the horrible virus they carried. 28 days later, a guy named Jim wakes up from a coma. He is completely alone. He leaves the hospital, he walks the streets screaming for someone, anyone; no one answers. After hours, he comes upon people, but they don’t respond. They chase Jim. All hell breaks loose. Selena saves him from getting mauled to death, having to kill one of her own group mates to survive. She tells Jim about the viral outbreak that swept through Britain and how just a single drop of infected blood can transmit the fast acting Rage virus. Jim goes home and finds his parents killed themselves after reading there note. The two find themselves on the run, joining a father and teenage daughter, Frank and Hannah and together they have to journey across the country, avoiding these rabid infected towards there glimmer of hope…

28 Days Later rendered me speechless when I first saw it on TV back when I was in middle school. I never had an interest in zombies until the Resident Evil (movie 2002) but I never found them really scary, until this movie. The Rage zombies are damn scary as hell. They’re fast, they’re rabid, and what I liked is how they were physically toned down but still looked freaky. These zombies aren’t missing pieces or overly bloody, but there red vacant eyes, pale skin were a nice touch. The actors are fantastic; there aren’t many horror movies where I’m genuinely saddened a character dies or where they are in danger but here they felt real. The cinematography and score are beautiful. Seeing Jim isolated, hearing his voice echo was mind blowing. The twist the story takes at the end is pretty cool and bad ass. I consider this movie a horror classic and I highly recommend seeing it, may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Zombie Spring Breakers (2017)

download

Every so often I see an interesting looking B movie so I check it out. Sometimes they are great sometimes I watch them and wonder why in the hell I was dumb enough to watch it. This time it fell somewhere in between. The movie was not good, but it was an interesting concept and the actors really put their hearts into making what was clearly a bad movie and making it at least fun, which they did.

The basic idea is in a world where people worry about zombies the way people worry about catching a terminal disease a group of friends and one sister go on a vacation for spring break. We have the usual group, guy and girl who broke up fighting a bit, the hot sister and the perverted friend that later turns out to be a virgin, the quiet foreigner that becomes heroic later, you know the crew. Anyway, eventually things go bad and the race to get off the island begins. It has its moments of being funny, but for the most part it’s a cliché zombie B movie with some nudity and small amount of gore. It is interesting enough or fans of B movies, but for everyone don’t bother watching it. Also the ending is legitimately ridiculous. I understand where it came from and why, and it was admittedly pretty original and clever, it just made much of the movie pointless. Bonus points tho for doing something new tho. I don’t regret watching it, but I feel like I would be in the minority there. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

American Horror Story: Coven

ahs 3 So Coven is the third American Horror Story and this time we get a more magical twist on things. Namely witchcraft vs voodoo.

Zoe, a young teen, has a mysterious accident that leaves her boyfriend dead and a hell of a lot of questions to be asked. She is sent to Miss Robichaux’s Academy in New Orleans, a boarding school for girls with issues like this. She finds out she’s a witch descended all the way back to Salem, as well as her classmates with there own dangerous gifts and troubled pasts.A change in power is coming at the school as Madison, the mean girl of this school, is taken under the wing of dying supreme witch Fiona and an old grudge between Fiona and a ageless voodoo priestess gets wicked in this creepy power struggle…

I’m going to be blunt, I love this season but it ain’t much of a horror story. There’s frightening imagery but I got more of a R rated Hogwarts vibe. Still, I always was fascinated by witchcraft and voodoo and the season takes an interesting approach them. The characters are all solid and Kathy Bates and Angela Basset are welcome additions. The pacing and the smooth flow make it the most engaging, so if you are a newcomer, I’d recommend. checking this season out first. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Package (2018)

download

The Package is a um, interesting movie. The basic idea is ridiculous to even explain. When five friends go on a camping trip and decide to get drunk shit goes bad very fast. See when you have a drunk idiot playing with a butterfly knife while taking a leak bad things happen. Especially when your drunk idiot friends decide to scare you. The med evac gets there pretty fast so Jeremy gets there alive and well. His penis on the other hand, well that got left at the camp site when they accidentally gave the medics the beer instead of the penis.

Yea, that entire movie is a group of 4 friends trying to get Jeremy his dick back. The journey is quite eventful honestly. There are some injuries, a stolen boat, an 11-year-old pervert got slapped ( he deserved it) and even the heinous act of lost cell phones. Seriously tho the movie is weird, but in a fun way.

The movie has some solid acting and a fun premise. It isn’t new but can be exciting at times, if not goofy as hell needlessly. It is definitely worth watching if you like weird and awkward comedies.  Just don’t go into this expecting greatness, the movie is fun but it isn’t life changing or new, simply fun. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you greatness.

American Horror Story: Asylum

ahs 2

So, you know how you get nervous going to the doctors as a kid? Hell, damn right scared even; your heart beats tenfold and you scream in terror when you have to get a shot? Well, old school medical treatment was 1000 times scarier than a shot. So I was really looking forward to jumping into the Asylum for the second American Horror Story .

Our location is BriarCliff, an asylum for the insane during the 1960’s. A reporter, Lana, is investing the estate and finds herself locked within it’ walls by the conflicted and corrupt Sister Jude and her underling Sister Mary Eunice. After Lana’s false incarceration and a new prisoner arrives who claims to have been abducted by aliens, strange things begin happening. Mary Eunice begins changing, patients disappear when a Dr with a dark secret comes in, and Lana falls for a young, handsome therapist at the asylum who has has his own terrible secret that will follow Lana decades after the asylum, the psychotically brutal Bloody Face…

Of the series Asylum is my least favorite, but it’s still a solid season. I liked the new time period and how I look it as a representation of the cruel, gritty age of medicine ending and our more modern age of more ethical treatment taking over. The performances were better this season but I have to give a huge round of applause to Zachary Quinto for a surprising as hell performance that made damn sure I’ll never watch Star trek (reboot)  the same ever again. I loved the plot about Nazi experimentation and the Bloody Face Arc; what hurt the season for me was the alien abduction story. Don’t get me wrong, I found it intersting as hell but it dragged on too long and I felt it held too much weight on the overall narrative while other stories dried up too soon. Also, the ending of that arc made the end too sugary for me. In the end, AHS: Asylum was ambitious and while I find it my least favorite of the series, I think it’s still worth seeing. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

American Horror Story

ahs1

A few days ago I talked about the American Horror Story: Apocalypse teaser and I think it’d be a good idea to cover what I know of the series.

Season 1 is simple in concept, almost cliche, as we see a family with issues move into a new house in California. Viven, the mom and wife, had a miscarriage and in the aftermath, her husband Ben had a affair. There teenage daughter Violet acts out. They want peace for there family to heal in there new house, despite the strange neighbor’s and the house’s dark, morbid history. The neighbor’s troubled son Tate and Violet become close as a series of events start happening, leading to Viven getting raped by a freak in a gimp suit. It seems the Murder House may have new victims to add to it’s long list…

I didn’t know what to expect going in, just the popularity. Season 1, while not perfect, is really cool. The characters are flushed out and I actually was invested in them and there plights. Evan Peters as Tate stole the show for me. This is a show that blends aspe of real life fact and fictional horror, making some interesting stories. Where I felt a flaw was the last few episodes of the season, the pacing of the ultimate plot felt off, feeling somehow rushed and lagging at the same time. The end is clever but a little too chipper for me. In the end, season 1- Murderhouse is totally solid and I recommend it to New comers. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Mystery Men

mystery men Some love Batman, some love Spider-man. I love Mystery Men.

Mr Furious, The Shoveler, and the Blue Rajah (who doesn’t wear blue by the way) are superheroes in Champion City that get there asses kicked every night while the city’s flagship superhero, Captain Amazing, gets the glory. Well, Captain Amazing is dealing with a peculiar problem: he’s too good at his job and his pot of villains is drying up.So, using his alter ego, he influences the asylum to release his arch nemesis, Casanova Frankenstein. Casanova one ups the Captain and this trio of losers is left to free him. After recruiting The Bowler, The Spleen, and the Invisible Boy and getting a new arsenal and training from the Sphinx, can this team of average Joes save there city and Captain Amazing?

I love this dorky ass movie. Everyone is funny as hell; Ben Stiller is over the top, Hank Azaria is great as the cutlery throwing Rajah, and the Spleen’s killer farts. I love the music and costumes. This is a really cool, underrated superhero comedy with a good message I recommend checking out. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Dead by Daylight

dead by daylight

This review may not but long, but there isn’t a huge abundance of material to work with here. Before Friday The 13th: The Game, this was the big horror movie simulator. A group of people thrown onto a map having to escape from a deranged maniac who wants them dead. There’s not really much of a story, except that the killers are sacrificing these teens to the Entity and to fully register them as dead, they must be placed in these contraptions. The killers look cool, from a wretched Hag, to a face wearing Hillbilly and the survivors are your normal, young horror movie fodder. There’s no NPCs, it’s completely multiplayer.

Savior and I took this puppy out for a test drive; about an hour later we simultaneously blurted out “fuck this game”  and Savior deleted it. What hit us first was how long it took for us to really start the game. Unless you have a group of 5, a game between you and your friends won’t last long. We had matches that literally lasted 2 minutes. Being the killer was fun, I admit because compared to everyone else, you felt like a god on the map. Some teleport. Some have higher senses and some have traps and all have weapons of some kind. As a survivor you sneak, run, and “hide”- I put this in quotations because you get these closets to hide in that any killer with a brain would check. There’s perks but they don’t really come too much into play as a survivor. If that killer gets you, you’re totally screwed. Unless you’re really skilled or lucky with a dumb killer, the second that killer catches you you’re dead friend. As a survivor you have to fix 5 generators hidden on the map which are a pain in the ass because if you aren’t good at quick hitting buttons you’re  screwed, it makes noise and draws on longer. You have no defenses what so ever. Out of 10 games we played, we only saw 1 where a survivor lived. Honestly, we began laughing at a lot of scenes that should have terrified us; watching it is like a gory Benny Hill skit.

Dead by Daylight maybe fun for a little bit if you have a good group of friends, now would be the chance now that its free on PSN this month, but you’ll get bored quick even then. The objective never changes, whether its ranked or not. If it’s you and a solitary buddy, I wouldn’t waste my time. My the gaming gods bring you glory.

Puppet Master: the littlest reich trailer

WTF man, Puppetmaster is back. I was never a huge fan of the franchise but I know many who are. I can say this newest installment looks pretty retro which honestly made me kinda smile. I miss 80’s slasher movies. Anyway, if you’re a fan, what’s your thoughts on the new Puppetmaster? May the gaming gods bring you glory.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse teaser

This maybe a surprise but I’m a pretty big fan of American Horror Story. While not perfect, I love how each season manages to cram in strange and WTF stories and good characters and make them work. So far, I know season 8, Apocalypse, we’re getting mutants and the Antichrist, which was part of the first season. The teaser is cool and I can’t wait to see what we get in 2018. May the gaming gods bring you glory.
