The WaterBoy (1998)

the waterboy

The WaterBoy is one of the older Adam Sandler movies, back when he may or may not have still been funny depending on who you talk to since some people never really found him funny. Roger Ebert and Rotten Tomatoes gave this one horrible scores and IMBd was slightly kinder with a 6.1/10.

As for me? Well this one was hit and miss for me. It had its moments really that made me laugh, but all in all the movie was just more of Adam Sandler just sort of being a goof ball. The story itself is pretty ridiculous.  Bobby plays a guy obsessed with making water the best it could possibly be. He also happens to have a bit of a temper which results in some interesting skill at tackling ability which I am also pretty positive most of what he does is against the rules of college football.

Don’t get me wrong, the movie has its funny moments, and when I was younger Sandler yelling “Stop making fun of me” before drop kicking people made me laugh, but 20 years later I can seem to care as much. Don’t get me wrong, there are worse movies out there, and I still enjoy this one. However this one was better when I was younger. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Children of the Corn 5: Fields of Terror

children corn 5

So, wanna talk about a movie Eva Mendes doesn’t want to. In fact I gotta say there’s been a few famous starlets in the series before they were famous. Naomi Watts starred in Children of the Corn 4: The Gathering and Charlize Theron had a small bit part in Children of the Corn 3: Urban Harvest That being said, this review kinda sums up why I left the series with 7: these movies become stale real quick. Some friends who are supposed to be college age but we know are pushing 30 break down in a town, they go for help, come back and car is destroyed, kids lead them to weird cult leader played the late David Carradine and yadda yadda. I can’t lie folks, this movie bored the shit out of me. It’s not offensively terrible but it just couldn’t hold my attention, and that was at the height of my fandom. It’s the least WTF of the series, it’s not particularly gory or outlandish as others which kind of hurts the movie and I really can’t remember any new kind of piece to the lore. Carradine gives the best performance of the movie but isn’t there much and Eva Mendes is laughably bored but when these are the best features of your film, is it really worth remembering? In the end, it’s worth skipping, you aren’t missing much. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: the beginning

tcm the beginning

Lat year I talked about Texas Chainsaw Massacre when Tobe Hooper passed away; Tobe Hooper, R.I.P . This year I revisit the series after the passing of R Lee Ermey, Sheriff Hoyt, R.I.P R Lee Ermey

As the title suggests, the movie is devoted to showing how the diabolical Hewitt family of the remake came to power as well as the birth of Thomas Hewitt, the man who would become Leatherface. Tommy suffers from several birth defects, cast away and thrown into a dumpster after his mother dies during birth, in a slaughterhouse nonetheless. He is found and brought to the Hewitt family and raised as his own, deformed and mute, growing up to return to the slaughterhouse. But hard times have come to Travis County and the house closes, and after years of taking shit, Tommy snaps and the madness begins. Tommy’s uncle Charlie kills the town sheriff and takes his authority and identity out on the ghost town while coming across four teens on there way to enlist in Vietnam. In this encounter we see how things came to be, as well as the pivotal moment Tommy took his first face and picked up the chainsaw, his only real friend.

2006 was a bloody time in horror with Saw, Hostel, and the Hills Have Eyes being all the rage and this movie fits the trend. As far as A-B prequels go, it’s pretty solid. It’s very much a movie where you are invested in the family more than the heroes and I found myself much more attached to them then the people you should have been, although the Hewitts are the straight up bad guys here. Ermey as Hoyt and Andrew Brynairski as Leatherface were the highlights for me. It’s a VERY bloody and brutal movie so don’t watch it if guts make you sick. Overall, I thought it was a underrated slasher film that deserves a second look. To finish this review I want to quote R Lee Ermey as Hoyt, my favorite line from the movie and one that’s come to me a few times in real life, when all is said and done..

” Nobody will remember what we say here today, but they are sure as shit remember what we do,” – Sheriff Hoyt.

Iron Man 3 (2013)

iron man 3

Iron Man 3 is a weird one, it was one of (at the time) 16 movies to have grossed a billion dollars or more all time and was the 5th highest grossing film of all time, yet only the 2nd highest of that year. Yet it met with some pretty mixed reviews and some people actually consider this to be one of the worst in the MCU. Admittedly I do not personally fall into this category, but I do recognize that while it was a great movie it did leave comic fans much to be desired.

This movie sees Tony Start dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after the alien invasion of the Avengers movie. Really can you blame him? Dude went from fighting terrorist and a Russian dude to finding out there is life on other planets and gods with magic hammers floating around.

Speaking of terrorist, that is what Iron Man is back to fighting, a terrorist named Mandarin.  After bombing a bunch of stuff, Stark threatens him on TV so Mandarin sends a helicopter gunship to shoot up his house. Weirdly the plot of this movie is a huge dick waving contest between Iron Man and Mandarin.

As you would expect from the MCU the sound quality, visuals and acting are all high-class with a strong soundtrack. The story itself for Iron Man 3 is the only part that people really disagree on. I enjoyed it, tho I would call it middle of the road for the MCU, but others have hated it. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

*NEW* GHOST STORIES REVIEW *NEW* — The MAD MOVIE RANTER

Spookay. Horrific BUT for the right reasons? Skeptic Professor Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman) embarks upon a terror-filled quest when he stumbles across a long-lost file containing details of three cases of inexplicable ‘hauntings’. As soon as the heavy breathing hit those speakers over the opening title sequence, I knew what I was in for. The […]

Iron Man 2 (2010)

iron man 2

Iron Man 2 takes place around 6 months after the first and finds Tony Start dealing with his declining health as well as the United States government wanting his suits technology. He is also dealing with the world knowing he is in fact Iron Man, including a rouge Russian scientist, because you know its always a Russian in these movies. This Russian scientist wants revenge against the Stark family for numerous reasons some of which are probably valid.

The movie itself is about what you expect, its funny, witty and full of excitement which is exactly what Iron Man is known for, tho once again the villain for me is pretty meh.Whiplash is just isn’t great. I haven’t read the comics,  but I am told this is a common theme there as well. Visually the movie is great and the soundtrack may be the best we have seen in a marvel movie at the time it was released.

I doubt the movie is considered the best in the MCU by anyone, but I would be equally amazed if it was considered the worst by anyone. By all means watch this one, it is very enjoyable. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Children of the Corn 4: The Gathering

children corn 4

Fun fact for all those out there, I watched this directly after the first Children of the Corn much like Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows and Alien Resurrection this is a WTF kind of movie.

A mother has some harsh mental problems, as she keeps getting terrorized by a nightmare of rotting children. Her oldest daughter Grace is forced to come back to Gaitlin to take care of her mother, little brother, and baby sister (who is secretly her daughter) and be a nurse for the town Doctor. One night a sickness overtakes the children- many lose there teeth, many go comatose, some exhibit violent mood swings, and delusions but alas it’s a dead, zombie preacher kid that raises out of the grave. Secrets come out as Grace must save her daughter from reviving the horror of a young, demonic priest.

For the fourth movie in the series, it’s not too bad all considering. There is some genuinely creepy imagery and some decent creepy dialogue and make up. The acting is ok, and the goofy WTF nature is mainly stripped away which works well but is kind of a bummer. In the end it ain’t a bad movie, just mostly there. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Captain America Civil War (Iron Man Side)

captain america civil war

As many of you know, myself and @torstenvblog will occasionally choose sides for a sort of dual review. Some times we do it for fun where we flip a coin debate style and we take a side. Others we simply disagree. He did a great job last night with Captain America: Civil War (Cap side) and how he felt. I mean he is a complete jack ass agreeing Captain betray a friend over there, but he did a good job. I won’t bore you guys rehashing the story a second time since I will assume you either read his from last night or checked it out prior to getting this far down. No, instead I will focus on explaining why Iron Man was right.

First you got a bunch of super heroes flying around, many with damn near god like powers. Like literally Thor calls down thunder and has a flying hammer he flings around at will. Hulk occasionally snaps out and takes out the military while Iron Man accidentally invents Ultron. Yea maybe that should be watched a little bit.

It goes even further tho. Poor Black Panther and his family FINALLY leave Wakanda and what happens? A bunch of them end up dead when Scarlet witch blows up part of a  city. Who the hell does Captain hates America think he is that he should be allowed to let his team continue to wantonly murder people with incompetence?

Enter Iron Man, finally learning from past mistakes and trying to do the right thing, and yet here we are. Captain sucks at life can’t have his way, sides with a traitor and runs away. All in all tho, the movie is amazing and you can’t help but be entertained. Also enjoy the trailer below, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Captain America: Civil War (Cap side)

cap civil war

“United we stand, divided we fall” Optimus Prime and/or Pink Floyd.

Much like our Freddy Vs Jason (Jason’s side) ( Freddie vs Jason, The Freddie side. ) reviews this Halloween, we bring you the Saviorgaming Civil War special.

After the events of the first two Avengers films and Captain America: Winter Soldier the world begins to see the Avengers in a new light after Scarlet Witch causes an accident during a mission. Things get hurt, cities get demolished and people every time they get involved. They get summoned by Gen. Ross ( Incredible Hulk ) and presented with the demand the government now regulates the Avengers. Cap is outraged, not trusting the government and there intent after Shield was infiltrated. But Tony Stark, Iron Man, of all people sides with Ross. Tensions begin to flare between the frienimies but come to a boiling point when Winter Soldier seemingly strikes again, assinating King Tachaka of Wakanda, setting prince T’Challa  to assume role of Black Panther and hunt him down. Cap has to make a choice, follow the laws of the United States and stand by his team or save his best friend from the crimes Hydra forced him to commit as the Avengers collapse and fight!

So, of the huge trifecta of superhero collaborations in 2016 ( Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse , and Batman Vs Superman ) this is the best of the 3. The action scenes are entertaining and there is some good drama to balance. It’s a great end to the trilogy and a good start to Phase 3. The biggest flaw in the movie is the villain, Zemo, who is practically invisible to the plot…he feels a lot more like a glorified name drop. Sadly, I’m not really versed in the book as much as I want to be but I have to say I feel the movie does push the actual issue of government inferring in superheroes to the side for the Winter Soldier plot. I’m all Cap America in this situation; being a superhero means having to break rules and be strong enough to know the limit to operate yourself in.

Savior is covering the Iron Man (2008) trilogy and someday I will read the books for Civil War 1 and 2 and visit the topics again. Until next time true believer, may the gaming gods bring you glory.

“The best weapon is the one you only have to fire once”-Tony Stark

Ok so thats a bit paraphrased, but still I always liked that one. Tony start, billionaire, philanthropist, all around genius, whats not to love? Well he is kind of an egotistical jackass and it turns out his company is selling weapons to terrorist. Tony doesn’t know that, well until after he is overseas helping out the United States military and captured by terrorist and forced to build a weapon for them. Instead he builds what will eventually become the first Iron Man suit.

The movie is considered by many to be the movie that launched the juggernaut that is the Marvel cinematic universe. The story is great, the visuals spectacular and I am pretty sure when Stan Lee and crew created Tony Stark and Iron Man they did so specifically with Robert Downey Jr in mind.

The only real issue I ever had with the movie was the villain. Obadiah Stone just was never an interesting bad guy for me. Sure he was good enough, but he was just kinda there. The story of a father’s friend trying to take over the company just is no longer interesting to me, and I wish they chose a different route. But as far as an origin story goes, it worked. Most importantly tho with the ending while most heroes hide their identity we get Tony Start just saying yup, I’m Iron Man. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
