Our Favorites Day 5: Night of The Living Dead

Night of the Living Dead by George A Romero  is a classic zombie movie. And as I learned last year due to some forgotten paper work when it was made it has always been considered public domain, meaning you can find the entire movie on YouTube. I can also post it right here for you to watch. Seriously if you haven’t seen it, watch it below.

When I was a kid me and my dear old father used to watch monster movies every year when he was on vacation from work. He was an EMT and worked a lot, so when he went on vacation we would collect a huge pile of movies, usually Godzilla and vampires and stuff. That being said he also introduced me to this movie. It was the first black and white movie I ever watched and also to my knowledge the first zombie movie. My dad died last year of cancer and 2 of my 3 kids don’t really enjoy these types of movies the way me and my old man did, but me and my middle daughter still watched this together. Will also be sure to watch it with my youngest when she is older as well. Which is why this movie is on my list. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Daredevil season 3 trailer

In less than 3 minutes I suddenly wanted my Netflix back after seeing this trailer. I’m curious why he’s wearing his original costume again instead of the red. I personally think the impostor maybe Bullseye, which would be a great way to introduce him. I love that Kingpin is returning as the main villain and knows who Daredevil is. I can’t wait for season 3 to drop, and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Venom Gets 40 Minutes Cut

According to movieweb.com there is a ton of Venom that you won’t be seeing in theaters. About 40 minutes to be exact. Tom Hardy also said some of his favorite scenes also did not make it into the movie which really makes me wonder what did make it into the movie. A lot of people are bit nervous about this one with it being a Spider Man spin-off with no spidey and being separate from the MCU. Tho this does make a potential directors cut or deleted scenes extra on the Blu-ray pretty interesting. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Dark Knight Rises

dark knight rises

You know how people say there are no perfect trilogies? Most of us have our subjective favorites, but 9 out of 10 times the landing at the end may not be perfect. After how insanely epic Batman Begins and the The Dark Knight were, how did the final installment land?

8 years have passed since the death of Harvey Dent and Batman disappeared. Everything Dent did has been upheld under the Dent Act, locking up hundreds of criminals. Crime seems low, Gordon is nearly obsolete and Bruce Wayne is a battered recluse living in the renovated Wayne manor. Physically and emotionally he’s been torn down and Wayne Enterprises is bleeding money. A mysterious philanthropist named Miranda Tate and notorious Rowland Dagget are clawing for the company from 2 sides. After a run in with a cat burglar, Selena Kyle, Wayne discovers bad times are going to come again. A masked mercenary has come to Gotham with a small army of highly trained soldiers at his heels, working to break the city from the inside out. Enter Bane, the man who broke the bat; can the citizens of Gotham survive without there protector?

This is going to sound weird but despite how flawed it is, I do love this movie and I think, logical leaps aside, it’s a great end to the trilogy. I have to say Tom Hardy as Bane steals the show with his great dialogue, intimidating physical presence, and strange accent; I do wish Nolan picked a better explanation for Bane’s mask. I don’t get why Venom couldn’t be a mix of steroids or something, it didn’t have to have outrageous effects. I personally really like Anne Hathaway as Catwoman although she doesn’t have the cat puns or  the trademark whip. The supporting cast is great and I liked the inclusion of the “John Blake” character. I felt Bale’s performance in this was fine but I hated how much he growled as Batman and well, here we come to the logic leaps. Batman is paranoid and an extremely cautious character by definition so why the hell would he reveal all his secrets to a chick he slept with a couple days prior , let alone be shocked when she betrays his ass? Questions like this, how the hell he could get across the world and back to a quarantined Gotham in less than a day kind of break immersion. Another little issue I have is the final act drags a bit after the climax with Batman and Bane. It may sound like I’m nitpicking this movie but there’s great story arcs and a very powerful message in this final chapter that completes the trilogy quite nicely. In the end, it’s not perfect but it’s a damn good way to end the legend of the Batman. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Our Favorites Day 4: Freddy’s Dead

Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) Day 4 of out favorite movies is actually one me and @torstenvblog greatly disagree on. See i have fond memories of this horror/comedy and greatly enjoy this movie. I understand why so many people don’t, but this was the first movie I saw that showed that a movie could be both horror and comedy successfully. Tho I am greatly disappointed Tom Arnold and Rosanne didn’t get murdered.

The movie itself also had everything I like. Gross deaths? Yup, gotta love the nail on the chalkboard scene. Comedy? Yea I laughed at “The map says we’re fucked” after the kept driving in circles.  The movie’s title was a pretty big lie tho. The final nightmare? Come on there were movies after. Regardless this movie made my half of the list, tho @torstenvblog did mock me a bit as always. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Our favorites, Day 3:Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is day 3 of our favorite movies and this one is actually for a very similar reason to the last two days. It is simply a classic with good memories attached to it. Tho I do enjoy that one of the most famous killers in horror movies isn’t in the first movie from his iconic series. And please, don’t give me that ” well they talk about him” or ” they show him as a kid” because you all know what I mean.

The movie itself is not graphically amazing, the script isn’t. There actually isn’t much of a reason for this movie to be what it is. Seriously go back and watch this legendary beast from 1980. Hell just go look at metacritic. The movie gets trashed. A lot. But this cult classic holds special place in horror fans hearts and spawned movies and games. Speaking of games, Friday The 13th: The Game review is free on PSN in October. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Dark Knight

dark knight

For a long time there was a debate on the greatest superhero movie of our time, either Dark Knight or Avengers . Which ever side of the spectrum you personally fall on, it’s one of those few movies that is simply great.

Months after Batman Begins , Gotham is starting it’s turning point. Jim Gordon and Batman have fought to take on the mob with the new, handsome DA Harvey Dent and have pushed them to near extinction. A tomorrow is on the horizon it seems where Gotham would no longer need Batman; he sees how the people look towards Harvey’s warm, earnest smile for hope- a good man without a mask, the hero Gotham deserves. But what’s standing in the way? In there desperation, the mob turned to a mad man without scruples, without morality and is determined to watch Gotham fall into chaos and Batman become the lunatic he was meant to be: enter the Joker…

This is one of the rare times I believe a movie deserves the praise it gets. Bale again is great as Batman at the height of his reign with a a fantastic supporting cast. Heath Ledger as Joker was terrifying; I’m ashamed to say I was one of the nay sayers who hated on him when it was first announced he would be Joker but the second I saw him I was speechless and he truly changed the game and was a legendary villain. A huge actor overlooked in the movie is Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent and subsequently Two-Face. He absolutely nailed what made Harvey’s fall tragic while maintaining the menace and stature he had in Batman: the animated series . The plot is winding and well paced, full of real suspense and great action and character moments. The score, cinematography, and story are top notch. The movie is damn near perfect in my opinion and it’s a must see masterpiece. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Disgaea 1 Complete (PS4)

As I start some of my reviews, I would like to first say thank you to NIS America for tossing me a review copy of Disgaea.  Always a pleasure to work with them. However this isn’t why you all are here, you want to know the ins and outs and to know if this is worth your hard-earned cash or if maybe this one is better off in the Netherworld.

Well for starters you play as Laharl, son of the late king. His goal? Become the Overlord of the Netherworld naturally. This isn’t your typical game, for starters you aren’t really the good guy really. Laharl is a demon, joined by Etna, also a demon. Together they make a pretty good, if not semi dysfunctional team.

The story itself is solid, if not a bit dated at times but not in a bad way. It has a nice nostalgia feel to it. Many of the twist and turns you will see coming a mile away but you will enjoy them. I won’t spoil them for you obviously but the reason some clichés exist is because they work and people enjoy them.

The graphics have been updated to HD quality for the first time ever and as you would expect the game has never looked better. The graphics are crisp and clean and far more detailed than I expected when I heard we would get an HD remaster. They really did a top notch job on this one.

The sound also is well done with the voice acting fitting the characters well, right down to the robot. Yes there is a robot that joins your team, and he looks and sounds like a cross between a 70’s horror movie and something  Doctor Who might end up fighting.

With all that out-of-the-way we now get to actual playing of the game. This is after all the most important part. The game can look and sound as great as possible but if the game play sucks or there isn’t some real content whats the point? Well if you like tactical RPG’s you are already in the right place. Content? You have plenty. For starters you will get the main story which depending on your skill and how much time you want to take can easily run you 40 hours. This isn’t counting the item world which has nearly infinite levels you can fight through as you power up item to use in your battles.

If that weren’t enough there is the Dark Assembly, which is essentially the Netherworld Congress or Parliament. You can go there and spend mana ( which is earned by killing enemies) to do a number of things from adding new or stronger items or even powering up or weakening enemies. Unlike most games that have a level cap and such this game will let you take your characters to insane levels. You don’t have to by the way. Feel free to play it like you would a normal game. Or raise their levels so it is more challenging or simply raise your levels to godlike proportions the drop the enemies back to nothing and just march through the story. The possibilities are pretty wide open.

All of this isn’t to make the game sound perfect. While I enjoyed the chapter making jokes about the power rangers and many other aspects some of the battles were artificially hard. For example a couple had very few enemies they simply put them on tiles that made them damn near invincible that would also practically one hit kill your characters. The way to turn the tiles off? Well on the other side of the enemies. This isn’t a deal breaker by any means Bu I would be lying if I said it didn’t annoy me greatly at times. The battles can also get pretty repetitive, but that is pretty expected for any game of this genre.

Now the short and skinny, is this game worth buying? Rent it? Skip it entirely? Truth be told if you are a Disgaea fan, this is a must buy. In fact anyone that enjoys role-playing games would do well to pick this one up. It’s easy to learn, has a fun story and will introduce you to a series that many people including myself missed out on the early years for. This for me is an 8/10. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Hills Have Eyes(06)

hills eyes 06

The original The Hills Have Eyes fascinated my dad Duke so he was pretty pumped when the remake was announced. I’m happy to say without Batman Begins and the Hills remake, I don’t think I’d still be trying to write my damn book and that’s honestly one of the best things I can possibly say for it.

During the mid 40’s to the early 60’s the US government tested atomic bombs in the remote parts of the desert. They thought the land was barren but it wasn’t. Families bred, mutated and deformed living in the many caves and ruins of test houses of the desert surviving off of blood and flesh. The Carter family drove through the desert, lost on there way to California much like the original but what we would get is a much more atmospheric, emotional, and brutal tale of revenge…

Already from the beginning of the film with a gruesome set of opening kills and opening credits consisting of old test footage, bits of the deformities we’re about to see, and a great 50’s country song to put it in perspective we know it’s going to be a different beast than the first. The narrative feels much more complete for starters; we spend more time with the Carter family so when they start dying and violated, you really do feel for them. The movie has a great sense of isolation but also feels claustrophobic in all the right spots- in the vastness of the desert you never are really alone. The mutants are a huge improvement over the classic cannibals in that by the time you get a feel for there world, I got a extra layer of pathos to them. The effects on them were great and pretty damn realistic. The does damn good at being a bloody, intense horror movie but’s also a dark badass western. The fights during the second half are some of my favorites, harrowing but never feel like they jump the shark. The music is creepy but also epic, a good fit. The last seconds are sequel bait but also work as a good oh shit ending too. In the end, I loved this movie and I definitely recommend it. May the gaming gods bring you glory.
