House by the Cemetary

house by the cemetary

I’ve been watching some horror movies as of late, the first in the set was the unofficial third part of Lucio Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy ( City of the Living Dead and The Beyond being the first two parts.) Over a decade ago I watched The Beyond and a couple years later I saw Fulci’s Zombie, both films impacted me a lot so I was glad to see another.

The Freudstein house has had a long a sordid history of gruesome activity and murder. A young family takes the house over, the father working on research to jump start his budding career. His wife and young son are predominately left alone in this murky old house where the mom hears noises and her son keeps meeting a mysterious little girl that tells him to get out of the house, but something is lurking below them and it’s not friendly. Could it be the old Dr never left his home?

This review is rather tough. House by the Cemetery is a very eerie movie with terrific atmosphere, a great score, and some haunting practical gore effects BUT the dubbing is goofy at times, Freudstein looks likes he walked off the set of Goosebumps and there are some unintentionally hilarious things, especially with the damn son. It’s really freaking hard to say which side of the spectrum the movie falls on and in the end, that’s it’s biggest flaw. If you want something different in horror, it is a respectably freaky movie that deserves a watch, though you will laugh a few times you probably shouldn’t. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Phantasy Star Series

images

Every so often a series will catch your heart for various reasons, usually as a kid. For me those games were Shining Force 2 and Phantasy Star 4. That being said I was able to play many of the Shining Force games but as a kid, I was limited to Phantasy Star 4. See the internet wasn’t much of a thing yet so I was limited to what I could find and afford locally, and the Phantasy Star games simply were not in the cards for me. Once day through the power of the Sega Channel I was able to play Phantasy Star 3. Yes I will back up a step. At one point in the 90’s, way before Netflix and Xbox life and Gamepass Sega had a monthly gaming service called Sega Channel

download (2)

It worked through your cable hooked into your Sega Genesis and you could play a bunch of games as much as you wanted that month. Yea it was PlayStation Now/Gamepass about 20 years before they existed. Ok history lesson over.

The issue was in the time I had to play back in 1994 or so between being 10 and having homework and school and such I couldn’t beat the game then of course the game went off the channel. It would be years before I was able to play it again or Phantasy Star 2. In fact the next game in the series I would play is Phantasy Star Online, great games in their own right.

It would be years more before I would finally play the original Phantasy Star, and it pains me to say I have never beat any of the numbered series except number 4. I know the story, when I finally got access to the internet I read them many times. I love the story, and I hope to eventually sit down and beat the games. It would be nice to play a remaster, in fact there was one for the PS2 years ago but it never made it to the west. Sadly I doubt we ever see one, best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

The Happytime Murders trailer 1

After a small reprieve after being attacked by hordes of bird men and saving the eight dimension, I’m back to writing for the Savior once again and wow, did I come back on a good day. Savior brought a new comedy to my attention- namely The HappyTime Murders knowing my affliction of WTF movies and such. What was I expecting? I’m going to be brutally honestly, I was thinking maybe it was going to be Rob Zombie style horror, exploitation movie. Nope…it’s just, well, you’ll see. Suddenly my hype jumped to 10 and I can’t wait to see more. May the gaming gods bring you glory.

Don’t Bite Me Bro

download (6)

Don’t bite me bro is a game I came across while browsing the free games with my daughter the other day. Of course since we love zombie survival games like 7 Days to Die Revisted we downloaded this and played. It is 4 players couch co-op after all, so it was natural we would give this a shot.

I will say this, the game has a cool idea, an asteroid  hits the earth and turns everyone into zombies for some reason. Well not everyone, you have to rescue a few people plus you obviously are not a zombie. So the story while cool makes very little sense.

The controls the range from nice to damn near don’t work. The truck at times barely works, at times I found I could not drive in a certain direction where I had to reset the truck’s position, thankfully this is just a push of a button. Building can also be a hassle at times, placing items where you want isn’t always easy either and there are random times the game won’t even let you place items at all tho the game does not explain this to you, you just need to figure this out.

Another large issue is you will be attacked by hordes at regular intervals, but these intervals come pretty quick. This results in attempting to explore nearby and having to rush back to defend your base. This is actually really damn annoying honestly, it gets easier tho as you save more people at least since you can set them up to defend your base, which is nice of them.

The game can be fun, but has its issues. It is pretty new and hopefully with some updates it will be improved since the game does have potential. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Are Mobile Game Players Gamers?

download (5)

Every so often I hear someone mention gamers and consoles or PC but then add “except mobile/cell phone games” which always leads to the discussion, do people who play cell phone games really count as gamers? Well to truly answer this question we need to ask, what is a gamer in the first place? urban dictionary describes it as any one that plays a video, computer or tabletop game while merriam-webster defines it as a player who is game OR a person who regularly plays computer or video games.

Now that we have established from two sources that a gamer is anyone playing a video or computer game, we now have to establish, are people playing mobile games in any real numbers? Well according to business insider in 2017 mobile and tablet games were expected to bring in 42% of gaming global revenues, 32% of that specifically from mobile. In comparison console being 31% is the next biggest piece of that revenue pie, narrowly losing to mobile games.

Now we have to ask ourselves, if anyone that plays a video, computer or table top game counts as a gamer why would we not count mobile games? And more importantly, who is spending billions of dollars on cell phone games if not gamers? There must be a crossover where people who own consoles and computers are buying cell phone games, but also people that down own these things are simply spending a lot of money on cell phone games. Whether it be just microtransactions for one or two games or simply buying a bunch of different games, they clearly spend as much money and play as many games as console and PC. For me the answer is obvious, if you play on console, computer, tablet or even your cell phone, you are a gamer. We all worship the same gods, and those gods are the gaming gods, and they love us all. Except RNJesus, he is a dick. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Playerunknowns’s Battlegrounds (Xbox One)

download (4)

PUBG, at one point this game was huge, still is really but for various reasons it has fallen out of favor with many people. This honestly isn’t about all that, so if you are here to see me bash this game in favor of Fortnight or say how much better than Fortnight this game is, that won’t be happening. All I will say is this, while there are similarities the two games do differ in-game play. Fortnight is far less realistic than PUBG while PUBG attempts to capture a more combat sim play style. I understand the comparison to an extent but I truly do not understand why people insist on thinking people can’t like both or why someone can’t prefer one over the other.

PUBG is as we all know is a battle royale game, 100 people dropped onto a map, you search for supplies, last man standing wins. You can also play as a team with the same rules but you know, last team wins. It is a pretty fun concept but the game does suffer from issues on the Xbox, even on the One X. People regularly die before the game even finishes even rendering for example. Switching equipment can also be a chore, to the point that hiding is almost a requirement, at least for newer players, and this can result in your untimely death. There also is no real tutorial mode which while not a huge issue, also doesn’t tell you much about the control scheme which takes some getting used to.

That being said, the game is in early access which gives it some space for improvement, and the game has been getting pretty regular improvements. Nothing amazing and still has a long way to go, and I doubt most people will care to wait around for it. Personally I doubt I will play long-term myself. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Dark Souls Remastered Test Review

images (2)

This weekend they ran a test on the servers for Dark Souls Remastered, so I spent one night playing on my PS4 pro and one on My Xbox One X. Now to be upfront when it comes to graphics the OneX has a slight advantage in the lighting department but honestly unless you are a graphics snob, there isn’t a significant difference here.

Graphics aside that we won’t talk about since they look great compared to the original release, the controls are much smoother than they used to be but still don’t feel that great compared to Dark Souls 3 or even  Scholars of the first Sin. The camera functions amazingly tho which was always one of my two major complaints, my other complaint? The hit boxes. When playing the original I would hit people and my damn weapon would clearly hit the enemy but would go right thru the guy causing no damage. I always felt like playing the first Dark Souls was less about being good and more about mastering a broken camera system and game. I am happy to say however that both of those issues have been fixed completely.

What you end up with now is what can only be described as the best Dark Souls experience you can get on console. The game looks beautiful, controls better than ever, the camera works great and the battle system now relies on skill and knowledge. While I understand many fans will disagree with what I have said about the original release, this is a great place for people who never played the first to finally get to play. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Lucifer Cancelled, Save Lucifer Trends

download (7)

As many of you know I am actually a pretty big fan of both Lucifer the show and the comic book, and most of you are probably already away Lucifer has also been cancelled as Fox was clearly taken over by Thanos and he kills everything we love. Well to be fair I guess if Thanos took over fox half the shows would have survived. Anyway there was a fun side to this, for a little bit the hashtag #SaveLucifer was a trending topic on Twitter. Some of you may be wondering why this is fun, well you guys and gals know what the show is. Imagine being someone who doesn’t know or at least doesn’t know the show was cancelled and happens to be very religious.

Yes, I am wondering if someone saw this and took the message the wrong way and actually thought people wanted to save the literal devil. I happen to have a weird sense of humor tho. Other sad news is it seems season 3 ends on a cliffhanger, and as of now there won’t be a season 4. Yea I am real happy about that. For more info click here. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
