5 Saddest Deaths in Gaming

The title says it all, this is just my personal list of 5 deaths that just for whatever reason seemed particular sad for me either because emotionally they sucked or because I just felt cheated and as usual, there is no particular order. Also there will obviously be spoilers for at least 5 games.

Thane, Mass effect 2. I know its technically possible to not have him die, but his death is still sad as hell. He is a great character and despite being an assassin you couldn’t really ask for a nicer teammate. He left us far too soon.

Lavitz Slambert The Legend Of Dragoon. Ok what the hell, this is one of the first guys to join your party, quickly becomes one of your characters best friends. You spend a ton of time getting him into fighting shape and BOOM son of a bitch gets killed pretty randomly early on to be replaced by a guy that will have all the same stuff. It is essentially pointless outside of the story, which honestly could have sent the king that joined you back to the castle and left the Lavitz with you and nothing would have changed.

Lee. Ok this dude got screwed. He saves a young girl he doesn’t know after pretty much going to jail on some bullshit he shouldn’t be going to jail for. Gets stuck in the zombie apocalypse and STILL manages to be a decent human being. Gets bit by a zombie while, rescues a little girl from a crazy guy and dies. This was sad on the grounds of him being a great character and it just being unfair.

Aerith Gainsborough. Look we all know she was going to be on the list, we also all know why. Lets just move on.

John Marston. This guy got the shaft. No lube. Forced to work for the government he essentially goes on a sanctioned killing spree across half of America and Mexico to kill his former gang just so the government can gun him down in the end anyway. John must have pissed off a lot of people to get that treatment.

Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition

Any long time followers of the blog know I have a love hate relationship with this game. More on that here Kerbal Space Program. Hardest game for PS4? for the longest time the game was basically broken, and not even in a small way. The only way to really play it was to learn how to manipulate a system that didn’t much work, to the point the company de-listed the game and hired a completely new company to make it. However, how does it stack up? This one will be a bit long if you want a quick is it fixed and good sort of deal, scroll down to the end. If you want the long version where I talk about the PC, the original console version and the enhanced version keep going.

First off, the PC version is the original version and is probably the best version in terms of content. It is further along in development by a bit and has all the mods you can dream of. The controls are nice, the graphics are beautiful and is the definitive version. It also isn’t exactly all that heavy on your computer specs.

The original console version, this thing looked nice but damn was it a broken pile of shit. It would randomly delete your entire game, and not just the one you were working on. All of your save data. The control nodes were kind of like trying to do upper level geometry while drinking whiskey and juggling. Somehow, the game was fun as hell. I played it from the day I bought it until the day the Enhanced version came out.

Kerbal Enhanced Version. I gotta be honest here, this version may be my favorite version. First, I do prefer console games. I love a controller in my hands, tho I do own the PC version. That being said, the enhanced version is far superior to the original. The maneuver nodes work amazing, the ability to switch controls on the fly (pun intended) between rocket and planes in amazing and as always success or failure is just a lot of fun. Caddyshack (1980)

Oh caddyshack, you beautiful classic bastard. Its hard to believe this movie is going on 38 years old. The late Rodney Dangerfield is hilarious playing a brash new member of a very exclusive golf club as a very young Bill Murray plays an obsessed grounds keeper just trying to kill a gopher, and directed by the late great Harold Ramis, so at least he has that going for him. This movie is one of those classic 80’s movies that people today still quote and look at as an all time great and with good reason. People just loved this movie from the very beginning. Even today sitting down to watch it just brings a smile to my face. Any movie fan needs to watch this movie, even if its just for the history. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Whats it like trying to be a Twitch Streamer?

Most gamers have sat down and wondered what it would be like to be a streamer on twitch, some may have even tried it. But what is it like to put an even semi serious effort into it? Honestly vastly different than most people expect. Many people think its just a simple matter of sitting down with whatever game you want, hitting that stream or share button and away you go. Technically speaking thats all it actually is. But what if you actually want people yo show up or more importantly stay?

This is the part people don’t usually talk about. Sure we all get the idea that you have to be either insanely good or insanely entertaining when it comes to playing, and being both really helps. That part is kind of a no brainer. But there is that part we don;t think about. Networking. That first milestone on Twitch of 50 followers can be brutal for some people and for others it is that 3 concurrent viewers achievement. Both of these are hard to do if you aren’t on other social media sites talking to people and letting them know your stream exist in the first place. My first stream was 3 viewers, and all of them were family or a friend I pretty much harassed into watching. This is however where your streams will start. Since than I have spent hours talking to people from Scotland and Ireland and all over the world..

The real question you have to ask yourself before streaming is, do you mind spending hours playing for no audience while building a small community? Also do you mind grinding away at a labor of love for the hope of someday maybe making a few bucks to supplement your income, because honestly most people won’t stream for a living. You might, most people won’t. If you can do these things long term and stay positive, it might just be for you. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Metal Gear Survive

When I first saw this game I had the same thought many people had. What the hell is this and what did you do to Metal Gear. Tho as I am not a huge fan of the series I kept an open mind saw a few trailers like the following that gives a few more details.

After seeing that with some of the good looking visuals and see how the game will function more I have actually changed my mind from my initial “What the hell” reaction. It really now more of a WTF reaction. The game doesn’t look bad, and honestly it might just be because it is so different from the rest of the series it just seems so vastly different that it almost seems heart breaking to have the Metal Gear name. I will admit tho that it does seem rather interesting and I am not against playing this one, but I will be waiting on reviews and a sale for this one after its February 20th release date. Sharknado 5 (2017)

Oh Sharknado. I am pretty sure people mostly watch these movies to see how far off the deep end of what the fuck did I just watch they can go, and Sharknado 5 goes even further off that deep end than ever before. I am talking hit a rock star with a bus so he plays some metal while driving down the road then kills a shark with his guitar style off the deep end. The movie is goofy and silly as hell, just like the last 4. The dialogue is corny, the visuals are pretty much as B movie as they can possibly get. And if you enjoyed the last 4 you will like this one, if you didn’t, this will not change that at all. In fact this one may actually make some fans shy away from continuing the series, and I do mean continuing since the ending pretty much promised a part 6.

However I did enjoy the movie for what it was, and I will watch the next one. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.

Reboots and Remasters?

Are we finally hitting the point of too many reboots and remasters? Recently it was announced that Animaniacs would be getting a season 2 on Hulu ( more info here ) And in the last few months we have gotten remasters of Final Fantasy 9 (PS4) a Star Ocean The Last Hope in HD and that is just off the top of my head and we aren’t even counting movies or games of the past few years. But when is this going to far? Believe it or not Peter Pan, The Grinch and even The Crow are supposedly getting reboots this year.

Now i’m not saying reboots or even remasters are bad, as you can see from my FF9 review I loved it, and when I get the time to finish up Star Ocean unless the 2nd half of the game falls apart that will be getting a pretty positive review as well. And I loved Star trek (reboot) but I would like to see some more original ideas tossed out there. Netflix has had some movies that while not perfect were pretty original for example The Babysitter (2017) or Little Evil

By the away sorry about all the links, I doubt anyone will actually read most of them. They are just kind of there in case you want a reference point. I am actually going to take an odd stance I have no seen many take. When it comes to movies, I am not a fan of the reboots coming so much, but in the games I love all these remasters. Many games are being lost to time and new generations simply don’t get to enjoy many of the classics. These remasters give a whole new class of gamers a chance to play them. That being said, remakes are not something I can get behind. As a huge Final Fantasy 7 fan I have very little faith the remake will be good for example. Dark Souls Remastered

Well the title says a lot. The following video will say much more.

Now the video and the title will say a lot, but there is more info out there. For example there is a trilogy box set that comes with Dark Souls one ,two and three along with a ton of other stuff like art books, book ends and other assorted items, and all for the low low price of $450 (American) Now that won’t be in the cards for me and the sooner than expected release date of May 25th.

What does the remaster include? Well 1080 graphics on the PlayStation and Xbox one as well as upscaled 4K graphics on the One X and Pro with native 4K on the PC. I do have some concerns tho, the original dark souls was damn near broken at times and it basically required manipulating broken hit boxes and camera angles as opposed to actual skill. Dark Souls 2 to a lesser extent had a similar problem but Scholar of the First Sin fixed those amazingly, and I really hope the remaster of DS1 does the same. I am personally excited but optimistic. Elite Dangerous: My Journey Home

As some of you may be aware I made the epic or maybe horrible choice not long ago to travel to Colonia in one day. It took just under 14 hours. More on that trip here. Elite Dangerous: Colonia

The journey home I was a bit more methodical about and took my time, and even visited some of new stations they added along the way such as the one shown in the picture inside of a nebula, hence the red lighting. From Colonia to there I made about 30 million in exploration money. Could have done better but I am trying to combine making some cash with getting home in a decent amount of time.

Now like most explorers are prone to doing I chose to land on a random moon to take my SRV out for a spin, break up the travel a bit, find some new materials and such. Tho while streaming and chatting with a friends I sort of messed up a bit and landed hard, LIke real hard, my shields failed instantly and my hull dropped to 28%. So i drove around a bit, found some stuff and went back to that station for repairs before heading back out on my journey home. Probably not my best move. My Game of the Year for 2017

Everyone has a choice for game of the year 2017, some are obvious some are not. Obviously I can only choose from games I have personally played (sorry Nintendo) and for me there is only one possibility, and only one game that would come close to a 10/10 score (tho i’d never give a 10/10 that implies perfect and perfect doesn’t exist) and that game is Persona 5. The game was beautiful, had an amazing story the sound was top notch. But there is one thing this game has that many other amazing games just didn’t match up to. You could easily log over 100 hours into persona 5 playing the game normally and not finish it. There were a lot of great games in 2017, but for me there was just no other choice.
