So I’m going to be honest, I’m pretty damn behind on modern horror classics. I’d say Split is probably the most recent I’ve seen and it was 2017 before I saw Sinister , half a decade after release. This being said, I missed Get Out, Jordan Peele’s breakout horror hit last year. While it’s on my list of horror films to see, I found myself radically surprised by the first trailer of Us. The concept seems pretty cool, having to fight a warped version of yourself and your own family. There is some creepy imagery and I’m genuinely intrigued and can’t wait for more. Randal Peltzer was average traveling inventor and salesman who wondered into a mysterious little shop in Chinatown, trying to sell his wares to no a vale. The old man doesn’t budge. Meanwhile Randall sees something at the furthest reach of the shop, a cute little critter he’s never seen before. He inquires about it but all his offers are shot down; Randall ends up taking the creature with 3 basic rules to care for it: don’t ever get it wet, don’t expose it to bright light, and don’t feed it after midnight no matter what. The maogi called Gizmo is a gift to Billy, Randall’s son, a quiet good hearted banker crushing on Kate, who has a pretty legit reason for hating Christmas. Gizmo is adorable and affectionate but isn’t long until Billy learns how important the rules are. Getting wet, Gizmo reproduces but his offspring aren’t as lovable. In fact they’re little bastards. Well, after the leader of this new brood cuts the wire to Billy’s alarm, he inadvertently feeds them after midnight. They transform into hideous, mischievous, and murderous monsters that wreck havoc in the town, and it’s up to Billy, Kate, and Gizmo to stop them…
Dude, it’s hard not to like Gremlins. The characters are really likable and the story is a strange but warm mix of family film and creature feature. Gizmo is one of the cutest damn things I’ve ever seen and the Gremlins are nightmarish. I can actually recommend this as a family film as well as a simply good movie for the holiday. This seems like a classic 1930’s movie that I would never get around to watching but is worth seeing.
The 7th Guest: The Board Game
The 7th Guest was a PC game originally released back in 1993, which you can still purchase over on Steam believe it or not. It has some mixed reviews but overall it seems solid enough and tells the story of, quite simply a mansion full of puzzles and toys. You will attempt to spend one full night there and the winner gets their hearts most secret desire. Their Kickstarter page has a ton more info.
This is where the board game comes in. It is for 2-6 players (ages 12 and up) and can take one to 5 hours depending on the rules you play with. This seems pretty cool because sometimes honestly I am playing with my friends while having a few drinks and we just want something to do while having fun. We want something to do for 4 or 5 hours. Other times I am playing with my kids and they do not always have a huge attention span so 1 or 2 hours is great.
The game itself is largely puzzles and logic test for you to solve to advance which the other players can steal ( and you can steal theirs) This all sounds pretty simple but of course, nothing in life is. There seems to be some twist and turns such as spaces that will toss you someplace else or force you to unlock extra rooms on your way to the exit.
A good sign in all this is the game is actually being created by people like Rob Landeros and Charlie McHenry, the people that founded Trilobyte games and created the original game, so if you happen to be a fan of the game and are worried this will deviate too far from your beloved 90’s memory I don’t see that being an issue. They even started to design the game from the ground up around the original map of the PC title. I have spoken to them and it looks like the game will be shipping in January so as you can see I am finding out about this a bit late. Savior Gaming doesn’t even normally cover board games, but this one just seemed pretty cool and I decided to share it with you guys. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
Chris D’elia: Man on Fire
Chris D’elia, from now on known as Chris because honestly, I don’t know how to say his last name. I also didn’t really know who he was but he seemed pretty funny. Not like your typical comedian funny but more like Georgie Carlin style where he simply comments on life. This mostly was the case tho he did tell a few stories about his personal life, such as his friend buying him pants that fit for his birthday. This will probably piss a few people off honestly but I thought it was quite hilarious.
He also goes on about how people, in general, aren’t special nor are you the main character in movies like you think you are. He is obviously much funnier but he has a valid point as well. The standup does have quite a bit of swearing and offensive language, which for me is no big deal but do not watch this with kids or if you work out a lot and don’t like having your balls busted about it. Alien: Blackout trademarked
I can’t say there’s many games I’m looking forward to many games in the near future but when it was announced Fox trademarked “Alien: Blackout”, a new game somewhere in the Alien universe. While I highly doubt it’s going to be set after Alien: Covenant , I personally think it would freshen up the Xenomorph in games if we saw some aspects of the prequels involved like the black ooze and the mutations they bring. I wouldn’t be angry if the Neomorph made another appearance in the series. Another thing that would be awesome if some of the Kenner toy designs made an appearance as a new means of enemy types.
Essentially what I want from Blackout is nothing from Aliens: Colonial Marines ; I want a game with challenging, varied Aliens, a good story, and a some good action. While I love Alien: Isolation I do think the next step would be to show how intense a gun fight with a Alien can be. We have a long wait ahead but I can’t wait to see we get. Rick and Morty season 3
After the sad conclusion to Rick and Morty, season 2 Rick found himself incarcerated for his countless crimes against time, space, reality, and even versions of him and his grandson Morty. Meanwhile, Beth and Jerry’s marriage crumbled as well as Beth’s concept of her own existence, leaving Summer to try finding refuge with some new ” questionable” friends and Morty becomes too aware of how much he can’t remember…oh and Rick turned himself into a pickle to escape family consoling. PIckle Rick!
Season 3 continues the trend of being outrageously funny and deep at the same time, which will always be the show’s greatest strength. This season I really started to feel for Beth, especially during FroopyLand. There’s a few episodes that are slow but for the most part I laughed my ass off the whole way, especially the Pickle Rick episode. If you loved Rick and Morty, season 1 and 2, you’ll love the 3rd but I do recommend starting from the beginning because there is continuity to the show. May the gaming gods bring you glory.
Trevor Noah: Son of Patricia
Trevor Noah: Son of Patricia is the new stand-up from Trevor Noah, and it is a bit different than usual. That isn’t to say it is bad, it is quite humorous. He will discuss topics such as his vacation to Bali and why he shouldn’t have let his friend plan it all, his first experience with tacos and the difference between racism in American and his homeland. The runtime is around one hour, so it isn’t a long watch but honestly, this one isn’t for everyone and certainly is not for children. The portion on racism will be uncomfortable for many people simply because of the language he usees. It is interesting and quite funny, but for some, he may use certain words more than you would like.
As a whole however this isn’t the typical stand-up I expect from him and while I enjoyed it the special is different than usual, but give it a shot. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
The Forest (PS4)
The Forest is a survival horror game much like many others. It is also sort of like the TV show Lost. You crash on an island with weird stuff going on and you have to survive. The twist here is the cannibals running around that steal you son right after you crash.
Your mission here is to survive on the island, unravel its mysteries and find your son. Sounds easy right? Well, a lot of things sound easy. But can you find food and water while building a shelter all while avoiding people that want to eat you?
The cannibals are smart, they will watch you and occasionally strike but not always right away. Sometimes they will circle around and try to catch you when they think you have left. They also will many times retreat as opposed to dying and will even come back with friends or simply not attack at all if they don’t have superior numbers.
The cannibals aren’t the only enemy, the weather also plays a part. The rain will soak your clothes and getting cold is also an issue. I won’t cover all the dangers, as some of that I will leave as a surprise for those playing the game. As a huge fan of 7 Days to Die Revisted I have to say this game is probably better. At the very least graphically it is, tho it is not perfect. It does have the occasional frame drop and rendering does take a second on occasion in heavily populated areas but none of this is too bad, tho admittedly the game is pretty dark even if you pump the brightness up. Regardless, the game is well worth the $20. Best wishes and may the gaming gods bring you glory.
Omen Of Sorrow (PS4)
Omen Of Sorrow is an old-school 2D fighting game that honestly I did not have high expectations for. It kind of looked like a sort of Killer Instinct clone which really probably wouldn’t play very well, but it did look pretty awesome at the very least. Here is the trailer so you can see what I mean.
When Aone Games gave me this one to try it out, which I am always grateful for I figured I would stream it and give my impressions live. For those that watched you saw me jump right into an online battle and get annihilated. After that, I jumped into the Arcade mode, picture a sort of Mortal Kombat Tower experience where you pick a character and fight your way through opponents. This mode went much better on the I didn’t get killed.
After this, I was encouraged to hit the story mode. The story mode will see you going from character to character as you attempt to discover the secrets behind what happened behind a village of monsters. I won’t go into this but the chat agreed the story was quite compelling and interesting, with some planning to buy the game themselves.
That being said the characters are quite varied and based off the lore of monsters and more with characters such as Imotep and Quasimoto. There is a werewolf and a vampire and more. The characters are beautifully designed and control nicely, each with their own moves and personalities to go with them. In fact, my only real complaint here is the voice that says the characters name and introduces the rounds. She seems disinterested and out of place to me more than anything.
Now the reason you are all here, should you buy this, or simply move on to something else. Truthfully for a fighting fan, this is a good buy, the game could use a few more characters but in a world dominated by high profile fighting games, it is hard for a newcomer to enter the arena. Mortal Kombat and Injustice basically have the genre on lockdown with DBZ right there. Omen of Sorrow isn’t perfect, but it is the best 2D fighter to come along in many years and it is nice to see a fresh face that is fun to play. 8/10.
